About Kulturarena
Kulturarena — edition 2026
2026 Edition — 34th Edition
Seven weeks of festival, five programme strands, over 50 events: Kulturarena 2026 remains Thuringia's largest summer festival. From July 8 to August 23, 2026, the Jena theatre forecourt will host events under the open sky — framed by the Theaterhaus, the Volkshaus, and the classical cityscape. Seven Weeks of Open Air in the Heart of Jena
Kulturarena Jena is the largest summer festival in Thuringia and a rare phenomenon in the German festival landscape: seven weeks of open air in the city centre, without VIP areas and without reserved grandstands, with a deliberately low-price policy. Since 1992, the Theatervorplatz (theatre forecourt) has transformed into an open-air stage in mid-July — framed by the Theaterhaus, the Volkshaus, and the classical cityscape.
Over 50 Events, Five Programme Strands
The festival covers five programme strands: Concerts (Pop, Rock, Indie, Folk, Jazz, World, Electronic), Films (Open-air cinema with Film e. V. Jena), Theatre (opening by Theaterhaus Jena), Classical Overtures (Jenaer Philharmonie), and Children's Programme. Over the 34 years since 1992, the programme has evolved: from originally focusing on World Music and Classical Jazz to ambitious Pop music and German-language singer-songwriters — while maintaining an international standard.
Headliners 2026 — Les Négresses Vertes to Open
The 2026 line-up combines international acts with German audience favourites. The cult French band Les Négresses Vertes will open the festival on July 8. Other headliners include Bosse (sold out) and Sportfreunde Stiller (sold out) from the German pop scene, Danish singer-songwriter icon Agnes Obel, British soul voice Tanita Tikaram, Austrian downtempo pioneers Kruder & Dorfmeister with an audiovisual show, German singer-songwriter Enno Bunger, Marlo Grosshardt, and Brazilian singer Mari Froes.
Established Atmosphere and Fair Prices
The atmosphere of Kulturarena is unmistakable: with no reserved grandstands, everyone finds their own spot, the mood at the beer stands is legendarily relaxed, and ticket prices are deliberately kept low. Soundchecks in the afternoon also turn into small public mini-concerts. Around 70,000 visitors experience the festival every summer — along with numerous guests who follow the events from adjacent streets and cafés.
Jena — University City in the Saale Valley
The university city of Jena (around 110,000 inhabitants) is located in the Saale Valley in the state of Thuringia. The Friedrich Schiller University shapes the cityscape just as much as the optical industry around Carl Zeiss. Visitors to Kulturarena often combine the festival with hikes in the striking hills of the Saale Valley (Jenzig, Forst, Kernberge) or a visit to the Optical Museum and the Jena Planetarium — the latter also serves as a venue for the "Rocket Men" series during the festival.
