August opens by the water in Saxony-Anhalt. On Saturday night, Magdeburg turns its entire Elbe waterfront into one long music night, with twelve stages and fireworks. Further south, around fifty wineries along the Saale and the Unstrut unlock their cellars at the same time. In between sit an indie festival at the foot of the Brocken, a supermarathon across the Harz and the longest folk festival in the state.
Our pick this weekend is the tenth lantern night in the ducal vineyard at Freyburg. If you want volume instead, choose between indie pop in Elend, dark electro high above the Bode valley and six young rock bands playing on top of a mine shaft. Twelve dates to open the month, on August 1 and 2, 2026.
Riverside @ Night in Magdeburg: twelve stages, one riverbank
On Saturday, August 1, the whole Elbe waterfront belongs to music. Magdeburg's tourist information office builds twelve stages for Riverside @ Night, adds beach bars and closes with fireworks over the river. Bands and DJs play in parallel, and there is no admission charge.
The format rewards wandering: one stage, a few songs, then the next. Turning up without a plan works fine here. Riverside @ Night ranks among the most remarkable city festivals in Saxony-Anhalt. For many people in Magdeburg it is the real peak of the summer. A full night by the river with no ticket booth at the entrance is a rare thing at this scale.
Open wine cellars on the Saale and Unstrut: lantern night in Freyburg
On the first weekend of August, around fifty wineries and growers' associations along the Saale-Unstrut wine route open their doors. The Days of Open Wine Cellars and Vineyards bring tastings, cellar tours, vineyard walks and live music.
The highlight is the tenth lantern night in the ducal vineyard at Freyburg. The Winzervereinigung Freyburg-Unstrut on Querfurter Strasse works as a starting point. Saale-Unstrut is Germany's northernmost quality wine region, and this is the weekend it shows its most open side. If you would rather meet a wine in the cellar than in the glass, start early: the guided tours are spread across both Saturday and Sunday.
Rocken am Brocken: closing day on a meadow in Elend
Rocken am Brocken is the indie festival of the Harz. On the Gieseckenbleekwiese in the village of Elend, right at the foot of the Brocken, around 6,000 people gather each day. The 2026 edition runs from July 30 to August 1, so Saturday is the final day.
The programme covers indie pop, indie rock, hip-hop and electronic music, with names including Esther Graf, Marlo Grosshardt and Swiss + Die Andern. The setting does a lot of the work: a meadow, forest and low mountains instead of a concrete site. Anyone catching only one day gets the festival at its busiest on Saturday.
Unter dem Himmel in Thale: dark electro above the Bode valley
The Harzer Bergtheater at the Hexentanzplatz is one of Germany's most dramatic open-air stages. On July 31 and August 1 it hosts Unter dem Himmel, a festival for dark electro, industrial and electronic music.
VNV Nation is the figurehead act, IAMX a regular fixture, and the line-up keeps growing each year. Hard synthesizers inside a natural amphitheatre high above the Bode valley produce an atmosphere few other festivals in the state can match. Saturday is the second and final day. Allow extra travel time to Thale, because the Hexentanzplatz sits well above the town itself.
Zerbst Heimat and marksmen's festival: eleven days begin on Friday
Zerbst/Anhalt celebrates its Heimat and marksmen's festival from July 31 to August 10. It is considered the longest folk festival in Saxony-Anhalt, and the opening weekend is traditionally the busiest.
The Zerbst fairground hosts shooting contests, the horse-market lottery, fairground rides, live music, dancing and fireworks, along with a wide range of food stalls. Held in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district, it counts among the largest citizens' festivals of its kind in the state. If you prefer folk festivals built on neighbourhood rather than tourism, Zerbst is the right address.
Jessen school and heritage festival: a wine princess on the Elster
The small Elster town of Jessen has been holding its school and heritage festival in early August since the 19th century. In 2026 it runs from July 31 to August 10 and ranks among the most tradition-rich folk festivals in all of Saxony-Anhalt.
The centrepiece is the Jessen wine festival with the crowning of the wine princess. Around it sit eleven days of celebration: a castle concert, a parade, a children's day and a fairground. On a weekend when Saale-Unstrut is already opening its cellars, this is the state's second wine address, much further east in the Wittenberg district. The opening falls exactly on Saturday and Sunday.
Hüttenrode Grasedanz: a grass queen and a hay auction since 1885
The Hüttenrode Grasedanz is one of the oldest customary festivals in the Harz. Since 1885, the Hüttenrode district of Blankenburg (Harz) has crowned a grass queen and a hay princess every summer. The 2026 edition runs from July 31 to August 2.
Three days bring a parade, a medieval market, a volleyball tournament, the witches' night and a hay auction. The mix sounds odd, which is exactly why it is worth seeing: agriculture, the Middle Ages and village sport across a single weekend. Anyone travelling through the Harz who wants to avoid the big stages will find the counter-programme in Hüttenrode.
EURO MOTO at Oschersleben: a full race weekend
Germany's leading motorcycle racing series has been called EURO MOTO since 2026. From July 31 to August 2 the paddock stops at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben for IDM / EURO MOTO Oschersleben.
Racing takes place in the Superbike, Supersport and Sportbike classes. Oschersleben lies west of Magdeburg in the Börde district and counts among the most established circuits in the country. Practice sessions and races spread across three days, with Saturday and Sunday forming the core. For motorsport fans, this is the obvious fixture of Saxony-Anhalt's August opening.
Ottonenlauf: 69 kilometres from the Harz plateau to Quedlinburg
Three distances, three starting points, one shared finish. On August 1 the Ottonenlauf follows the Selketal trail across the Harz into the old town of Quedlinburg. The 69-kilometre supermarathon starts in Stiege, the 45-kilometre marathon in Alexisbad, the 26-kilometre half marathon in Meisdorf.
All three fields come in along the same finishing straight, inside a UNESCO World Heritage site. That produces a rare sight for spectators: half-timbered lanes turned into a finish channel. If you are not running, simply stand in the old town on Saturday and watch. The route in between crosses some of Germany's finest low-mountain scenery.
Wernigerode Castle Festival: the 30th edition opens
For a whole month, the Wernigerode Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra takes over the castle above the town and the Liebfrauen concert hall. The Wernigerode Castle Festival opens its 30th edition on August 1, 2026.
The programme includes roving concerts through the castle rooms, opera evenings, film music with the Harz Symphony Orchestra and children's concerts. The fairy-tale castle above Wernigerode provides a backdrop no concert hall can replace. Saturday opens a month that consistently pulls classical music out of the auditorium. Families should look at the children's concerts first.
Schachtrock in Wettelrode: a first edition above a mine
The Schachtrock Festival celebrates its premiere in August 2026. Six emerging rock bands from Sangerhausen, Eisleben and Nordhausen play for eight hours on August 1 at the Röhrigschacht mining experience centre in Wettelrode.
Rock culture meets mining heritage here, in the Mansfeld-Südharz district. The Röhrigschacht is a show mine, so the stage effectively stands on top of a piece of copper-shale history. First editions are always a gamble, but they are rarely crowded. If you want to hear regional bands before they reach bigger stages, Saturday offers eight hours of exactly that.
Summer music in the Bismarck houses: trumpet and organ in Schönhausen
On August 1, 2026, the Altmark Festspiele visit Schönhausen (Elbe), the birthplace of Otto von Bismarck. Summer music in the Bismarck houses takes place in the historic St Marien und Willebrord church.
Jiří Houdek plays trumpet, Aleš Bárta the organ, and Max Urlacher reads texts by Rilke, Kafka and Kisch. Every summer the Altmark Festspiele bring music into unusual venues between Stendal, Salzwedel and Tangermünde, running in 2026 under the motto "Glück erkennen". This evening is the quietest date of the weekend and the clear opposite of Magdeburg's music night.
