Literature festival in the Burgenlandkreis
KUMBRA Literature Autumn is not a festival with a central venue. It is rather a network: The cultural initiative KUMBRA, supported by the Burgenlandkreis, curates readings, talks, and musical-literary evenings over several months, taking place in the most beautiful historical spaces of the region — from Droyßig Castle Church to Goseck Castle and Neuenburg Castle in Freyburg. Those who connect literature and Central German culture will find a program here that is rarely found in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.
The events are curated, small, and approachable. Instead of large hall readings, KUMBRA invites you to intimate venues: castle chapels, libraries, castle halls, wine cellars. The program ranges from "Spooky & Beautiful" in Droyßig Castle Church to author talks with Ulrich Hub and Thomas Leibe, historical lectures — for example, on the role of animals in wars — and the choral-literary "Sound of Silence". Wandering readings through the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region are also part of the concept.
The Burgenlandkreis in the south of Saxony-Anhalt is one of the densest castle and fortress areas in Germany — Neuenburg Castle, Goseck Castle, Saaleck Castle, Moritzburg Castle, Droyßig Castle Church. Added to this is the Saale-Unstrut wine region with Naumburg as its center, whose UNESCO World Heritage Cathedral is one of the most important buildings of the German High Middle Ages. KUMBRA turns this density into a festival concept that makes the district experienceable as a coherent cultural landscape.
KUMBRA works as an open platform: cultural carriers, associations, castles, and churches submit their events to the office, they are included in the joint program and communicated in the print calendar and on the website. The registration deadline for organizers for the 2026 print calendar is May 15, 2026. The office is located at Schönburger Straße 41 in Naumburg.
In 2026, the KUMBRA Literature Autumn program again runs from August to December, utilizing around 20 venues across the Burgenlandkreis. Readings in Droyßig Castle Church, Goseck Castle, Neuenburg Castle, and historic fortresses combine literature with listed architecture. The cultural initiative KUMBRA curates the program; individual dates are continuously added. Registration deadline for organizers for the 2026 print calendar: May 15.
