Two Days of Handmade Goods Against the Naumburg Cityscape
The Naumburg Arts and Crafts Market is one of the most beautiful markets for regionally rooted arts and crafts in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. In the Burgenland district, in the cathedral town with its UNESCO World Heritage Marienstift, the market square becomes a workshop alley for two days at the beginning of October: looms, potter's wheels, jewellery studios, block printing tables, and soap makers line up in front of half-timbered and clinker facades.
What the Stalls Offer
Around 50 exhibitors from all German states set up their workshops under pavilion roofs. You will find hand-woven scarves, felt objects, jewellery made of silver and tombac, turned wooden toys, block-printed fabrics, bookbinding art, natural soaps, leather goods, and ceramics. Important rule: everything must actually be handmade — imported goods or resellers have no chance. The market is organised by the textile workshop Manuela Fiebig, who shapes the "Handmade" network in the Saale-Unstrut region.
Atmosphere Between Cathedral and Wine
Naumburg lies at the intersection of the Saale and Unstrut rivers, with the wine-growing region starting just outside the town. At the market, regional vintners serve their white wines, small manufacturers sell honey, mustard, and sour cherry jam, and street musicians play accordions between the stalls. Those who still have time after the market can reach Naumburg Cathedral with its world-famous Stifterfigures by the Naumburg Master within a ten-minute walk.
