Open-Air Weekend "Umsonst & Draußen" in the Stadtgarten by the Kaiserstuhl
The Stadtgartenfest Herbolzheim upholds a fine South German tradition: "Umsonst & Draußen" (Free & Outdoors). Free admission, open-air, regional bands alongside established acts, cool beer, and simple food. It's not a festival that advertises with stars — it's a festival that focuses on atmosphere. Young bands from the Breisgau and Markgräflerland share the stage with acts that have gained a local following through performances in Freiburg, Lahr, and Offenburg.
The program reflects the musical diversity of the Breisgau region: Indie rock bands from Freiburg, folk songwriters from Glottertal, soul and funk combos from Offenburg and Lahr, pop-rock from Emmendingen. International singer-songwriters, who come to the region through word-of-mouth recommendations, also find their audience on the Stadtgarten stage. The mix is carefully curated by the festival team — quality over quantity.
On Sunday afternoon, the children's program takes center stage: interactive concerts, craft stations, games on the lawn, and a family picnic. This makes the festival a multi-generational meeting point where parents can relax and listen to music while children play independently.
The Stadtgarten Herbolzheim, a green oasis in the city center, offers the ideal setting: old trees, expansive lawns, a small pavilion, and enough space for several hundred visitors. The acoustics are good, the atmosphere is relaxed — you can sit on blankets on the grass, grab a beer, and listen to the band changes as the sun sets.
Herbolzheim, a small town with just over 11,000 inhabitants in the Emmendingen district, is located on the northwestern edge of the Kaiserstuhl and belongs to the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald tourism region. Viticulture, scattered fruit orchards, and the Bertholdshöhe viewpoint characterize the landscape. Visitors to the Stadtgartenfest should combine their stay with a bike tour to the Kaiserstuhl or a wine tasting on its slopes.
The exact dates for 2026 will be published by the City of Herbolzheim and the Stadtgarten Association in spring. The tradition is the last weekend of July or the first weekend of August (Friday–Sunday). In 2025, the festival took place on August 1st and 2nd. The lineup will be gradually announced in May/June 2026 — with a focus on regional up-and-coming bands from the Breisgau region.
The concept remains the same: Open-air in the Stadtgarten, free admission, regional bands alongside established acts, singer-songwriter sets, soul/funk combos, and the children's program on Sunday afternoon. Catering provided by local associations. The festival is more than just music — it's a meeting point for Herbolzheim's summer evenings.
The full lineup will be announced in summer 2026.
Completely free admission to the entire festival. Food (Bratwurst, fries, Schupfnudeln) and drinks (draft beer, wine from the Breisgau, cocktails) at usual festival prices.
