Wine in Germany's Northernmost Growing Region
Saale-Unstrut is Germany's northernmost quality wine-growing region. Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, Weißburgunder, and Portugieser thrive on the steep shell limestone terraces along the Saale and Unstrut rivers in the south of Saxony-Anhalt. Once a year, on the first Saturday and Sunday in August, more than 20 wineries invite you to the Open Cellars and Vineyards Days — one of the coziest wine experiences in Central Germany.
Here you'll experience genuine wine culture: cellar tours with the winemakers themselves, tastings of current vintages, wine hikes through the steep slopes, small concerts in the vineyards, and local cuisine. This time, the focus wineries are Weingut Böhme & Töchter in Gleina and Weingut Goldschmidt in Balgstädt, along with over 20 other addresses between Freyburg, Naumburg, Karsdorf, Roßbach, Höhnstedt, Bad Sulza, and Dornburg. Admission to the wineries is free — you only pay for what you consume or buy in wine, food, and souvenirs.
In the Burgenland District and Beyond
Gleina and Balgstädt belong to the Burgenland district in the south of Saxony-Anhalt. However, the Saale-Unstrut region extends across the state border into Thuringia. Those who plan the weekend well can combine several wineries into their own small tour — ideally by bike or shuttle, as tasting is part of the experience.
Open Cellars Saale-Unstrut — edition 2026
Both days from approx. 11 a.m. until late evening at all participating wineries. Each estate offers an individual program: cellar tours, tastings, wine hikes through the vines, small concerts, regional cuisine. Free admission — you only pay for what you consume or take with you.

By car via the A9 (Naumburg exit) or A38. Train: Naumburg (Saale) or Freyburg, then bike rental or shuttle.
