Pentecost Wine Festival over a 6 km hiking route through the Saale-Unstrut wine region
The Saale-Weinmeile is more than just a wine festival — it's a wine hike with all the trimmings. Over a distance of about 6 kilometers between Bad Kösen in the south and Roßbach in the north, more than 30 vintner stands are lined up, each directly in front of their own vineyards. You walk the wine mile, taste by vintage, chat with the vintners, grab a bratwurst in between — and try to remember your destination. The organizer is Saale-Weinmeile e.V. with around 50 member businesses.
While the Saale-Weinmeile attracts strollers all year round, the Pentecost Wine Festival is the central event: Saturday and Sunday, May 23 and 24, 2026, with opening hours Saturday 10 AM–9 PM and Sunday 10 AM–8 PM. The Saale-Weinmeile Pentecost Hike is the most important wine festival in Germany's northernmost wine-growing region.
Saale-Unstrut is Germany's northernmost quality wine-growing region — a region with a cool climate, mineral soils, and a tradition dating back to the 10th century. Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Weißburgunder, and the local Silvaner thrive here, on steep slopes cultivated by hand. Karsdorf belongs to the Unstruttal administrative community in the Burgenlandkreis district and is located directly on the wine mile.
Karsdorf is a village of about 1,500 inhabitants, nestled in the Unstrut Valley. Starting here offers the advantage of a quieter arrival than in Bad Kösen or Naumburg, which are often overcrowded on Pentecost. From Karsdorf, you can reach the height of the wine mile route in a 30-minute walk. In the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Burgenlandkreis, the wine mile is an absolute must-visit for wine lovers — travel by train is strongly recommended.
The Saale-Weinmeile becomes the largest open-air wine event of the Saale-Unstrut wine region during Pentecost. The Saale-Unstrut Tourism website confirms the official dates of May 23/24, 2026. Karsdorf, located in the Burgenlandkreis district, is one of the most accessible starting points for the tour.
Detailed program and stand overview available from May 2026 on saale-weinmeile.de.
Strongly recommended to travel by train! Take the RB to Naumburg (Saale) or Bad Kösen, then walk or take the Saale-Unstrut-Bahn to Karsdorf. Cars will have difficulty navigating the village streets, which are packed with parked vehicles during Pentecost.
Free admission to the wine mile. Wines, food, and drinks at the stands are priced separately.
Approximately 6 km between Bad Kösen and Roßbach. Can be walked in both directions. Tip: Spread the round trip over two days.
Over 30 vintner stands, plus bratwurst, cheese, fresh Federweißer (if in season), water, and bread.
Guesthouses in Bad Kösen, Naumburg, Freyburg, and Karsdorf. Booking well in advance is essential — Pentecost is the region's busiest weekend.
