Central Germany's largest traditional wine festival in Saale-Unstrut
The Winzerfest Freyburg (Unstrut) is the largest traditional wine festival in Central Germany and one of the most important dates on the event calendar of the state of Saxony-Anhalt. For three days on the second weekend in September, Freyburg's historic market square and the adjacent Rotkäppchen sparkling wine cellars transform into a huge wine and sparkling wine arena.
Even though the festival is formally held in Freyburg, it is an event for the entire Saale-Unstrut wine region: many vintners from nearby Laucha an der Unstrut and the surrounding communities of the Burgenland district participate with stands, tastings, and their own program points.
The market square serves as the central festival stage, and the Rotkäppchen Lichthof (courtyard) as the iconic concert venue (built in 1894, one of Central Germany's most spectacular halls). The Rotkäppchen sparkling wine cellars open their Rotkäppchen Bar on the piazza and host daily "Fizzy Friday," "Sektfrühstück" (sparkling wine breakfast), and live acoustic sets. Wine stands from individual vintner associations are set up throughout the town.
Saale-Unstrut is Germany's northernmost classic wine-growing region — and with over 1,000 years of tradition, one of the oldest. The region is located in southern Saxony-Anhalt and northern Thuringia, nestled between Naumburg, Freyburg, Bad Kösen, and Laucha. On approximately 750 hectares of vineyards, primarily Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Silvaner, Riesling, and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) are grown — protected by steep shell limestone slopes that give the microclimate almost Mediterranean characteristics.
Laucha an der Unstrut is located only about 4 km west of Freyburg, at the confluence of the Unstrut River and its side valley. It's a small town in the Burgenland district whose vintners have been part of the Saale-Unstrut wine region for decades. Visitors to the Winzerfest can easily combine their stay with a hike from Laucha through the vineyards to Freyburg — the official Weinwanderung (wine hike) on Friday afternoon follows exactly this route.
The 2026 edition of the Winzerfest traditionally falls on the second weekend in September. Three days of programming are spread across the Freyburg Market Square, the Rotkäppchen Experience World, and the surrounding vineyards. The highlights are the concerts in the Lichthof — one of Central Germany's most spectacular event spaces — featuring Borderline (Greatest Hits), Firebirds (Rock'n'Roll from the 50s and 60s), and WHY NOT (cover band).
