Kick-off of the Saale-Unstrut wine festival season with a hike through the Ehrau- and Schweigenberge vineyards
On May 1st each year, Freyburg an der Unstrut ushers in the wine festival season – in the Saale-Unstrut wine region, the northernmost contiguous growing area in Europe. The Freyburger Weinfrühling is one of the region's oldest and largest wine hiking festivals and will be celebrated for the 22nd time in 2026. If you're traveling in Saxony-Anhalt on the May Day holiday, this is the place to be.
The approximately six-kilometer hiking route winds through the Ehrauberge and Schweigenberge vineyards above the Unstrut River. Over 70 vintners, including many family businesses from the region, present their young vintages at stalls within old vineyard walls, wine cellars, and farm entrances. Complementing this are restaurateurs offering regional cuisine and street musicians at various points – cellists, accordionists, jazz trios. The opening ceremony at 10:30 AM features the Großjena Fanfare Band.
The Saale-Unstrut wine region in the Burgenland district is small (around 800 hectares of vineyards) but ancient – documented in writing since 998. The main grape varieties grown here are Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder, Silvaner, Riesling, and Portugieser. Freyburg is the historical capital of the region; the Rotkäppchen sparkling wine cellars are also located here. The Weinfrühling showcases the spectrum – from established cooperative wines to young winemakers who have entered the industry from other fields.
The Weinfrühling is family-friendly, but not a dog day – dogs are prohibited along the entire route. The town center of Freyburg is not accessible by car during the festival; parking and shuttle services are provided. For those who wish to start the day in style: visit the Neuenburg in the morning, have lunch along the vineyards, and enjoy the evening in town.
The 22nd Freyburger Weinfrühling 2026 continues the proven choreography of previous years: on the May Day holiday at 10:30 AM, the Großjena Fanfare Band e.V. will open the festivities atop the Ehraubergen. Afterwards, guests will flock to the approximately six-kilometer route – past over 70 vintners from the Saale-Unstrut region, who will be presenting their young vintages.
Specialties of Saale-Unstrut cuisine (regional cheese, game sausage, Müller rolls) will be available at the catering stands. Street musicians will perform at key points along the route. The program runs until 8:00 PM, after which the May Day holiday will conclude in Freyburg's town center.
Current detailed program and tickets available at freyburg-tourismus.de.
