The largest traditional wine festival in Central Germany
When the Rotkäppchen sparkling wine cellar, Neuenburg Castle, and the Marienberge hills frame the parade on the second weekend of September, it's time for the Winzerfest in Freyburg. The largest traditional wine festival in Central Germany draws tens of thousands annually to the small Saale-Unstrut town in the Burgenland district – in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. For three days, the market square belongs to the vintners from the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region, one of Europe's northernmost wine-growing areas and, with just 800 hectares, Germany's smallest quality wine-growing region.
The festival program has been honed over decades: Friday evening begins with band performances and the festive tapping of the wine barrel, Saturday is dedicated to music, market stalls, and wine tasting. On Sunday at 11 a.m., the emotional highlight follows – the proclamation and crowning of the new Saale-Unstrut regional wine queen on the market stage, followed by the traditional parade with over 30 floats, winding down from the Marienberge hills into the town center. Vintners, clubs, harvest wagons, traditional costume groups, and tractor convoys tell the story of Saale-Unstrut viticulture.
Freyburg is located in the Burgenland district (Saxony-Anhalt) between Naumburg Cathedral and Neuenburg Castle, at the confluence of the Saale and Unstrut rivers. Here, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, Bacchus, and Burgundy grape varieties grow on steep loess slopes with a shell limestone subsoil. The Rotkäppchen-Mumm sparkling wine cellar, founded in Freyburg in the 1850s, brought worldwide fame to the town. The Winzerfest is the stage on which this region, often overlooked by wine tourists, celebrates its identity.
The Winzerfest is both: a folk festival (Volksfest) with dance stages, a children's carousel, and bratwurst – and a wine tasting event with top regional vintners (Pawis, Thürkind, Bernard Pawis, Winzervereinigung Freyburg, among others). Those who want to delve deeper off the main stage can visit open wine cellars or take a special trip on a steam train from Staßfurt to Freyburg.
The 2026 edition of the Winzerfest Freyburg will again take place on the traditional second weekend of September. Regional and national bands will perform on the market stage, including Hello Grand, Ventura Fox, and Ton Kollektiv. Sunday morning features the sparkling wine breakfast on the Piazza with Anja Mann & Benjamin Trostdorf on guitar. Highlights: the crowning of the Saale-Unstrut regional wine queen on the market stage at 11 a.m. and the subsequent parade.
