Grand Founding Festival for the 150th Anniversary of the Elpersdorf Fire Brigade near Ansbach
Elpersdorf, a district of the Middle Franconian district capital Ansbach (Ansbach district), is one of those Middle Franconian villages where the Volunteer Fire Brigade functions not only as an emergency organization but also as a social center. Founded in 1876, the FFW Elpersdorf looks back on 150 years of continuous club history. For this occasion, the brigade is celebrating its Founding Festival with a Parade in 2026 – one of the largest fire brigade anniversaries Middle Franconia will see in spring 2026 (several volunteer fire brigades in the region are celebrating 150 years, including Colmberg, Herrieden, and Flachslanden).
The multi-day festival weekend from Friday, May 29th to Sunday, May 31st, 2026, will take place on a specially constructed festival grounds in Weihergasse in the Elpersdorf district. As is traditionally the custom, a fire brigade festival of this magnitude follows a set schedule:
Months before the festival, the brigade actively seeks banner carriers – children aged 6 and up who will carry the banners (signs) of the participating clubs and fire brigades in the parade. This tradition is part of rural and fire brigade customs and ensures the involvement of the youngest generation in the anniversary.
2026 is an exceptional anniversary year for the fire brigades of the Ansbach District Fire Brigade Association: In addition to Elpersdorf, the FFWs Colmberg, Herrieden, and Flachslanden are also celebrating their 150th anniversaries, and the FFW Müncherlbach will turn 130. The founding wave of these brigades in the second half of the 19th century reflects the spread of the volunteer fire brigade system in the Kingdom of Bavaria after 1850.
The FFW Elpersdorf is a central social institution in the district. The active brigade, youth brigade, possibly respiratory protection carriers, drivers, and the command form the operational structure; in addition, the brigade shapes club life, organizes annual festivals, Carnival balls, and participates in parades throughout the entire Ansbach area. The 150th anniversary is an occasion and a platform to make this integration with village life visible.
The festival weekend from May 29 to 31, 2026, is the highlight of an anniversary year that the FFW Elpersdorf has been preparing for in advance. About a hundred days before the festival, the brigade launched the call for participation as banner carriers for the Sunday parade.
The program follows the typical pattern of a Middle Franconian fire brigade anniversary: a solemn festival opening, festival evenings with live music in the festival tent, and a grand parade to conclude on Sunday with the participation of guest fire brigades, traditional costume clubs, and music bands from the entire Ansbach district.
Specific times and program details will be published before the event by the FFW Elpersdorf.
