A Franconian Kirchweih in the Saale Region

Saal an der Saale is a small Franconian municipality in the Rhön-Grabfeld district, located on the Bavarian Saale river between the Rhön and Hassbergen hills. The annual Kirchweih is the most important village festival and is part of the deeply rooted festival culture of the Lower Franconian Kirchweih region.

What Characterizes a Lower Franconian Kerwa

In Lower Franconia – and especially in the Rhön-Grabfeld district – the Kirchweih (regionally also called "Kerwa") follows a centuries-old tradition:

• erecting the Kerwabaum (festival tree) in the village center
• festive church service in the parish church
• Hammeltanz by the young men and girls in the festival tent
• catering with Lower Franconian specialties: Schäuferla (pork shoulder), Bratwürste (sausages), Brezen (pretzels), Hefekrapfen (yeast doughnuts)
• Festbier from regional breweries
• traditional live music from a dance band or brass band
• participation of local clubs: traditional costume groups, youth clubs, fire brigade, parish community

The Saale Region in Lower Franconia

The Bavarian Saale, a tributary of the Franconian Saale, gives the municipality its name. The region between the Rhön and Hassbergen hills is predominantly agricultural, with small villages, scattered orchards, and a dense network of Franconian inns. The Kirchweih in Saal is part of a much larger Franconian Kirchweih calendar, which celebrates the villages of the region one after another over several weeks in autumn.
