Four-day Burschenkirchweih in the Grabfeld region between Bavaria and Thuringia
The Höchheim district belongs to the municipality of the same name in the Rhön-Grabfeld district of Lower Franconia. The Grabfeld is a historical landscape in the transition between Bavaria and Thuringia, characterized by rolling hills, small villages, and strong Catholic traditions. The municipality, with around 600 inhabitants, celebrates its Kirchweih every year on the first October weekend, organized by the local Burschenverein.
Burschenvereine are a central pillar of village culture in Franconia. They organize the Kirchweih festival, preserve old customs, and ensure the generational transfer from young to old. In Höchheim, the Burschenverein keeps the entire Kirchweih tradition alive: from the joint church service on Sunday morning to the Hutbinden — a ceremonial gesture towards the young women of the village — to the Gögerschlag on Monday, a Franconian-Grabfeld tradition with a festive touch.
The festival takes place in a large festival tent on the outskirts of the village. Live bands, a high mass, a parade through the village, and the traditional Frühschoppen (morning pint) alternate over the four days. Each festival day has its own focus: Friday is the opening with the first band, Saturday is the festival evening, Sunday is dedicated to religious customs with Hutbinden and a wreath procession, and Monday is the festive finale with Gögerschlag and a donation parade through the village.
The Burschenverein's banner proudly states: "Kirmes is ä feine Sach, die ko mer jedes Johr gemach!" (Kirchweih is a fine thing, we can do it every year!). This line in the Franconian dialect perfectly captures the self-understanding of the Höchheim Kirchweih — it is a self-evident, annual event, supported by the village community and deeply rooted in the Grabfeld identity.
From Thursday, October 1st, to Sunday, October 4th, 2026, the Burschenverein Höchheim will host the traditional Kirchweih in the festival tent. For four days, religious and secular customs will be combined according to the classic Grabfeld pattern: opening, festival evening, high mass with Hutbinden, Gögerschlag, and festival conclusion.
The exact program with band selection and times will be announced by the Burschenverein in late summer 2026 on fraenkische-kirchweih.de.
Detailed program and live bands will be published by the Burschenverein Höchheim and on fraenkische-kirchweih.de.
