Summery wine festival in the reconstructed Roman winery amidst the Ungstein vineyards on the Weilberg
Anyone climbing the narrow vineyard paths in Ungstein will stumble upon an extraordinary place amidst the vines: the reconstructed Roman winery (Römerkelter) on the Weilberg. Here, where Roman vintners pressed grapes about 1,700 years ago, today's generation of Ungstein wineries celebrates its summer wine festival. The backdrop of rubble stone walls, an ancient stone basin, and an endless sea of vines makes the festival a declaration of love for Palatinate wine tradition.
The focus is on wines from the Honigsäckel vineyard area and especially from the Weilberg itself, one of the best-known Riesling sites in the northern Mittelhaardt. The vintners serve dry Rieslings, fruity Pinot Blancs, Pinot Gris, and Rosé wines, as well as Palatinate Sekt made using the traditional bottle fermentation method. The offering is complemented by Schorlen (wine mixed with sparkling water), grape juice, and non-alcoholic alternatives. Guests can chat with the vintners and each other at long tables under the open sky — typically Palatinate, unpretentious, and heartfelt.
The wine tasting is accompanied by classic Palatinate dishes: Saumagen (pig's stomach) with sauerkraut, grilled sausages from a charcoal grill, liver dumplings, Flammkuchen (a type of flatbread pizza), Palatinate sausage salad, and vegetarian side dishes. In the evening, live music — usually acoustic and atmospheric — provides the right accompaniment to a glass of wine. Those who arrive earlier can visit the site in peace and learn more about the region's ancient viticulture history.
The Wine Festival at the Roman Winery is a fixed date in the Palatinate wine festival calendar. Those who experience it once usually come back: the expansive view, the warm summer evenings, the wines directly from the producer, and the familiar atmosphere make the event one of the most charming summer wine festivals between Bad Dürkheim and Kallstadt.
From June 26 to 29, 2026, the Ungstein vintners will open their stalls at the Römerkelter. Expect dry Rieslings from the Weilberg, Palatinate Sekt, fruity Pinot wines, and a varied selection of Palatinate specialties. The festival begins on Friday and Saturday in the late afternoon, and on Sunday from midday. Monday will round off the weekend with a relaxed conclusion.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: wine service by the Ungstein vintners, regional cuisine, live music in the evening, and free access to the Roman winery site.
The detailed program will be announced shortly before the festival begins. Based on experience, the wine festival is structured as follows:
On all days, the Ungstein vintners will serve wines from the Weilberg, Honigsäckel, and Herrenberg sites. Specific program items, bands, and special events will be communicated via the Ungstein Weinwelt website and local notices.
Admission is free. Wines, food, and drinks are paid for directly at the stalls, usually in cash.
The Römerkelter is located on the Weilberg hill above the Ungstein district of Bad Dürkheim. Travel via the B 271 (Deutsche Weinstraße), exit Ungstein. Parking is available in the village; the path to the Römerkelter leads on foot through the vineyards (approx. 10–15 minutes walk, sturdy footwear recommended).
Usually from late afternoon on Friday to Sunday, and from midday on Sunday. The exact times will be communicated by the organizer in advance.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Wines, food, and drinks are paid for individually at the stalls — usually in cash.
The festival takes place largely outdoors; a jacket is recommended on cooler evenings. Access for guests with mobility impairments is difficult due to the location in the vineyards.
