Centuries-Old Tradition
The Augsburger Christkindlesmarkt is one of Germany's oldest Christmas markets. The first records date back to the 15th century. This makes the market intrinsically linked to the history of the Swabian Fugger city and part of its cultural heritage in the Free State of Bavaria.
Festive Setting at Rathausplatz
The venue is Rathausplatz, extending to Martin-Luther-Platz. In front of the Renaissance backdrop of the famous Augsburg Town Hall, stalls offer handicrafts, Christmas gifts, candied almonds, gingerbread, and mulled wine. The historic architecture lends the market a particularly atmospheric ambiance.
The Famous Angel Play
The centerpiece of the Augsburger Christkindlesmarkt is the Angel Play. Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday during the market's duration, 23 angels appear at 6 PM on the magnificently illuminated town hall facade, transforming it into a gigantic living Advent calendar. The Angel Play was invented in 1977 by Fritz Kleiber and is now the market's trademark.
Climax on Christmas Eve Eve
On the day before Christmas Eve, the angels, accompanied by the Christkind (Christ Child), appear at the grand town hall portal, approach the crowd, and sing a well-known Christmas carol with them. This moment marks the emotional conclusion of the market season.
Significance for Augsburg
With its long history, unique Angel Play, and impressive setting, the Augsburger Christkindlesmarkt is among Bavaria's most famous Christmas markets, attracting numerous visitors to the Swabian metropolis every year.
