145th Anniversary of the Burschenverein 1881 Segendorf with Pentecost Fair, Celebration Ceremony and Maypole Raising
The Burschenverein 1881 Segendorf was founded – as the name suggests – in 1881, making it one of the oldest "Burschenvereine" (young men's associations) on the Middle Rhine. Such clubs emerged in the 19th century as associations of young, unmarried men from a village, dedicated to preserving traditions; they took responsibility for organizing fairs (Kirmes), raising Maypoles (Maibaumaufstellen), village evenings (Dorfabende), St. Martin's Day processions, and other traditional events. Today, the club in Segendorf continues to uphold these functions, increasingly including young women and older members.
For its 145th anniversary in 2026, the club is combining the anniversary celebration with the traditional Segendorf Pentecost fair (Pfingstkirmes). A large marquee will be erected on the Auwiese, a picturesque meadow area on the outskirts of the village, which will host the central celebration ceremony (Festkommers), village evenings (Dorfabende), concerts, and children's programs. In parallel, smaller fairground attractions will contribute to the Kirmes atmosphere on the Auwiese.
A central tradition of the Burschenverein is the Maypole raising (Maibaumaufstellen), which in 2026 will take place on Saturday, May 23rd, at 4 PM on the festival meadow as part of the anniversary. The Maypole is traditionally sourced from a single piece of natural wood from the local forest, decorated, and erected using sheer manpower – an impressive traditional element that attracts many spectators.
On Friday evening, the official opening is marked by the celebration ceremony (Festkommers). Invited guests include honorary members, representatives of friendly clubs from Neuwied and the surrounding area, as well as the city of Neuwied. Speeches, honors, and musical contributions characterize the evening, which transitions into a relaxed village evening (Dorfabend).
For the anniversary, the club has developed an expanded program that brings together club members, residents, representatives of friendly clubs, and visitors from afar. The focus is on preserving traditions (Maypole, festive procession), sociability (marquee, village evenings), and family activities (children's afternoon).
The exact 2026 program will be published by the Burschenverein 1881 Segendorf at segendorf.info/burschenfest-2026. Planned highlights:
