La Strada — Street Art in the Heart of Augsburg
La Strada is the international street art festival of Augsburg, Bavaria's third-largest city and an independent city in the Swabia region. For three days, the historic Old Town becomes a freely accessible open-air stage: Street artists from around the world perform simultaneously in several central squares. The festival is an integral part of the Augsburg City Summer, a cultural programme that takes place throughout the city from May to September.
A Colourful ABC of Street Art
The programme combines acrobatics, juggling, mime, magic, puppet theatre, comedy, and music. In 2025, 23 street artists from twelve nations participated — including Hungarian puppet theatre, Japanese comedy acrobatics, and French breakdance. Up to six performances take place simultaneously each festival day, allowing the audience to move freely from one venue to another.
Venues in the Old Town
The performances are spread across prominent squares in Augsburg's city centre — most recently including Rathausplatz, Fuggerplatz, Moritzplatz, Martin-Luther-Platz, Holbeinplatz, and the Manzù Fountain. The festival thus runs like a common thread through the pedestrian zone, connecting gastronomy, retail, and culture.
Free Admission — Culture for All
La Strada is a festival without access restrictions. Admission is free, and performances take place outdoors. Artists primarily finance themselves through hat money — voluntary donations from the audience after the shows. The organiser is Augsburg Marketing GmbH; the festival explicitly stands for peaceful and tolerant coexistence in the city community.
Augsburg as a Cultural City
Augsburg, located in the Swabia region, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2019 for its historic water management system. La Strada fits into a vibrant festival summer that uses the city centre with its Renaissance squares, fountains, and burgher houses as a backdrop.
