Frisian Riding Tradition — Seven Tournaments from May to August on Keitum, Morsum, and Archsum
Ringreiten is a folk equestrian discipline that originated in the 19th century on the North Frisian islands and the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein. Riders gallop at a trot or canter under a wooden pole from which a ring of about 4 cm hangs — they try to pierce the ring with a lance. The smaller the ring and the more precise the speed, the higher the difficulty. Eight active clubs maintain the tradition on Sylt; the oldest, the Sylter Ringreitercorps von 1861, is among the oldest equestrian sports clubs in Northern Germany.
In 2021, Ringreiten was added to the state register of intangible cultural heritage of Schleswig-Holstein — official recognition of the discipline's social, sporting, and linguistic significance. On Sylt, Ringreiten is primarily practiced in the eastern villages of Keitum, Morsum, and Archsum, where the island's Frisian character is particularly preserved with its traditional thatched-roof houses, Sylt dialect, and old village meadows.
The 2026 season runs from May 24 to August 30 and includes seven tournaments, each hosted by one of the eight Sylt clubs:
Each Ringreiten tournament is more than just a competition: it's a folk festival where entire village communities come together. Before the competitions, there are festive parades through the villages — the riders in Sylt traditional costume, accompanied by brass bands. On the village meadows, the clubs set up marquees with food stalls, beer stands, and dance stages. The evening is celebrated.
The 2026 season of the Sylt Ringreiter tournaments comprises seven public tournaments between late May and late August. As every year, the Archsumer Ringreiterverein von 1863 opens the season at the end of May, followed by tournaments in Keitum and Morsum until the season finale, the Amtsringreiten at the end of August.
Each tournament is opened with a festive parade through the respective village. Detailed program items at insel-sylt.de/ringreiten-auf-sylt-termine.
You can reach Sylt by car via the Sylt Shuttle from Niebüll, by train from Niebüll/Westerland, and by ferry from Rømø (DK). The eastern villages of Keitum, Morsum, and Archsum can be reached within the island by bus, bicycle, or car.
The tournaments are free to attend. Food and drinks are sold on the village meadows.
Festive parades usually start before 10:00 AM in the village center, followed by the competitions from midday. In warm weather, be sure to bring sun protection and water.
