Sylt as the World Cup Stage
Since its inaugural event in 2021, Sylt has been one of the most spectacular stops on the international kitesurf tour. The wind and wave conditions off the Brandenburger Strand in Westerland — moderate to strong North Sea winds, long surf lines, almost always incoming waves — are considered among the most challenging and fairest on the tour. Sylt, in the Nordfriesland district of Schleswig-Holstein, is therefore a must-attend event for the sport's world elite.
Three Disciplines, One Stage
The program includes three disciplines, each with its own competition format:
- Wave — classic wave riding, judged on line choice, bodywork, and critical section surfing.
- Strapless Freestyle — risky tricks without foot straps, the ultimate discipline for all-rounders.
- Hydrofoil Big Air — high jumps on foil boards, measured by height and trick execution.
A Stadium-Like Atmosphere
What makes the Sylt stop unique is its proximity to the audience. 'Thousands of spectators line the beach, creating a stadium-like atmosphere where every heat is met with cheers, excitement, and celebration' — according to the organizers. On-site, there's a Beach Village with food, trucks, a test center for kite equipment, side events, and an after-show stage. International TV coverage and live streams broadcast the heats worldwide.
Sport and Sylt Summer
The GKA Kite-Surf World Cup is also a tourist magnet for Sylt at the end of the high season. Tickets are free, and the beach is publicly accessible. Side events in Westerland — DJ sets, cooking shows, athlete autographs — round off the program and turn the World Cup into a Volksfest (public festival) on the island.
