A week of events centered around the UNESCO World Heritage Water System
The Augsburg World Water Week is dedicated to the element of water and the city's unique historical water system, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2019. Centered around World Water Day on March 22nd, the week brings together a diverse program, making the topic of water tangible in its ecological, cultural, and social dimensions.
The program includes more than 55 events: art exhibitions and workshops at the Gaswerk, school activities and interactive formats, exclusive guided tours of the UNESCO World Heritage sites, and film screenings. The official opening takes place at the Environmental Education Center, with a preceding event for students.
The highlight is the World Water Day festival on Rathausplatz, featuring a UNESCO stand with a canoe and VR experience, vehicles from the wastewater management department, information booths from UNICEF and Viva con Agua, and drawing classes. At the Hochablass, a historic hydraulic engineering structure, the swa Water Day invites participation. A water documentary will be shown at the Thalia cinema.
Supported by the World Heritage Office, Stadtwerke Augsburg, and the Environmental Education Center, the World Water Week combines knowledge transfer, culture, and hands-on activities to raise awareness for the sustainable use of water.
From March 16 to 22, 2026, Augsburg will focus on water under the theme »Water & Gender«.
