In 2026, a new Christmas attraction will launch on Gottorf Castle Island in Schleswig: the Fairy Tale Christmas at Gottorf Castle. The organizer is the event agency Markt Macher (markt-macher.de), which specializes in historical Christmas productions. The premiere will span all four Advent weekends.

Gottorf Castle — Baroque Setting with Substance

Gottorf Castle is one of the most important castles in Northern Germany. Today, it houses the State Museums Schleswig-Holstein — from archaeological collections to the Globe House. For the Fairy Tale Christmas, the castle will be illuminated, and the entire island with its historic buildings, paths, and castle garden will be festively staged.

Magical World for Children and Adults

The organizers promise a densely themed festival:

• Magical Light Park along the paths of the castle island
• Life-size Fairy Tale Books as walk-through stations
• Elf Workshop as a hands-on activity for children
• Fairy Tale Teller with classic winter stories
• Santa Claus for visits and photos
• Fire Show at dusk
• Walking Acts from the fairy tale world will roam the grounds

Arts and Crafts and Culinary Delights

Accompanying this will be an arts and crafts market, complemented by culinary specialties — mulled wine, roasted almonds, regional delicacies. The mix of light installations and a classic Advent market distinguishes the Fairy Tale Christmas from purely commercial Christmas markets.

Schleswig — Town on the Schlei

Schleswig is located at the inner end of the Schlei, one of Northern Germany's most extraordinary bodies of water. The town in the Schleswig-Flensburg district combines Viking heritage (Haithabu is just a few kilometers away) with Renaissance and Baroque architecture. The castle island with Gottorf is the cultural center of the town — and in 2026, for the first time, the venue for a grand Christmas production.
