Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10 km run through the illuminated city center of Oldenburg on a summer evening in August
The Run Through the Night is Oldenburg's only night marathon and one of Northern Germany's most atmospheric running events. As dusk falls, the Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10-kilometer run start together through an illuminated Oldenburg city center, where cafés, restaurants, and residents line the course.
The event is organized by Oldenburg Marathon e.V., which also hosts the classic Autumn Marathon and the Öffentliche Laufserie (Public Running Series), two other pillars of regional running.
While most marathons start early in the morning, the Run Through the Night sends its participants off in the late afternoon and evening. The route through the illuminated Oldenburg city center creates a special mood: the historic facades around the market square, the palace, the Lambertikirche, and the pedestrian zone become a stage where sport and city life merge.
The event format offers three distances: 10 km for beginners, the Half Marathon (21.1 km) as the most popular distance, and the full Marathon (42.2 km) for ambitious distance runners. All three competitions use the same course section through the city center, which is run multiple times – a classic circuit format.
This non-profit club has been organizing the region's major running events for years: the Oldenburg Marathon in October, the Öffentliche Laufserie throughout the year, and the Run Through the Night in August. Behind the event is a network of helpers, sponsors, and the city administration, who transform the city center into a running arena for the evening.
Residents, cafés, and restaurants also turn the Run Through the Night into a Volksfest (public festival). Along the route, there are refreshment stations, music, and light installations. For many Oldenburg residents, the running Sunday in August is one of the highlights of the city's event calendar.
The 2026 edition of the Run Through the Night Oldenburg takes place on Sunday, August 23. The three classic distances — Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10 km — will be run in the afternoon and evening through the illuminated city center. As darkness falls, the Oldenburg city transforms into a running backdrop of shop window lights, streetlights, and refreshment stations.
The organizer is again Oldenburg Marathon e.V. Registration is via the official platform and marathon.de. As in previous years, several thousand runners from all over northwestern Germany are expected.
The joint date on August 23, 2026, brings together the Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10 km on the same circuit through the Oldenburg city center. For the 10 km runners, it's an attractive introductory format because they experience the full atmosphere of the event after a short running time. Half Marathon and Marathon participants benefit from the almost flat profile and the consistently well-lit course.
The route through the historic city center — Market Square, Palace, Lambertikirche, pedestrian zone — is actively supported by residents and local gastronomy. Cafés stay open longer, and bands occasionally play along the route. The combination of athletic competition and an urban summer night is what distinguishes the Run Through the Night from other marathon events.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Circuit through the Oldenburg city center with multiple loops. The exact route will be communicated via the organizer's website before the event. Refreshment stations around the course, medical support, and pacemakers for the main distances.
Street festival atmosphere along the city center route, gastronomy, and live music at selected points. A finisher area with catering and award ceremony will be set up in the finish area.
Entry fees depend on the distance and registration date — details and rates on marathon.de and via the organizer's platform.
