Lower Bavarian Volksfest on the Danube and Altmühl with a parade from Ludwigsplatz
The Kelheimer Volksfest is one of the most traditional Volksfests in the district of Kelheim in Lower Bavaria. Kelheim lies at the confluence of the Danube and Altmühl and is the gateway to the Danube Gorge near Weltenburg. The Pflegerspitz festival grounds are located on the Danube, directly on one of Bavaria's most beautiful river sections.
The kick-off is on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at 5:30 PM with the Volksfest parade. From Ludwigsplatz – Kelheim's central market square – the festival community, along with traditional costume groups, marksmen, and music bands, will march via Niederdörfl to the Pflegerspitz festival grounds. A concert will already be playing on Ludwigsplatz from 5 PM.
The program in the festival tent runs until Monday, August 17, 2026: beer tapping by the mayor, dance evenings with Lower Bavarian dance bands, morning pint (Frühschoppen), concerts, and a family day with reduced prices on amusement rides. Admission to the festival grounds is free.
The Kelheim associations – marksmen, traditional costume groups, young men's clubs, music bands – actively participate in the Volksfest parade. The focus is on commitment, creativity, and love for tradition. The Volksfest connects the young and old generations of the Lower Bavarian Danube town.
Kelheim is famous for the Liberation Hall (Befreiungshalle) on Michelsberg, built in the 19th century. From Pflegerspitz, you have a magnificent view of the city, Michelsberg, and the Danube. The Volksfest combines the classic Lower Bavarian beer tent experience with the historic backdrop of the medieval old town.
