A Village Kirchweih in the Saaletal
Wülfershausen an der Saale, with a population of just over 1,000, is located in the Rhön-Grabfeld district in the northern Bavarian state of Bavaria, about ten kilometers southeast of Bad Neustadt. The municipality is part of the Saaletal region along the upper Franconian Saale river and belongs to the parish community 'Um den Findelberg', together with Eichenhausen, Saal, and Waltershausen. As in many villages in Lower Franconia and Bavaria, the Kirchweih is celebrated here in autumn – usually around the third Sunday in October, which is anchored in the festival calendar as 'Kirchtag' (church day) in many places.
From Patron Saint's Day to Folk Festival
Originally, the Kirchweih commemorates the consecration of the village church and is therefore a deeply religious festival. Over the centuries, it has developed into a three-day village and club festival in Franconia and throughout Bavaria: a festive church service with a subsequent procession, a morning pint ('Frühschoppen'), dancing, and a festival tent on Sunday, coffee and cake on Sunday afternoon, and a cozy Kirchweih Monday with music and Franconian specialties. In Wülfershausen, the village community organizes the festival together with the local volunteer fire department and local clubs.
Franconian Feast and Rural Sociability
At the festival grounds and in the tent, you can enjoy classic Franconian cuisine: bratwurst grilled over beechwood fire, 'Schäuferla' (pork shoulder), Sauerbraten, sauerkraut, and fresh farm bread. This is accompanied by Franconian wine from the neighboring Saale wine-growing region – Silvaner from nearby Hammelburg, Müller-Thurgau, and Bacchus – as well as beer from regional breweries in the Rhön-Grabfeld area. The Sunday service in the parish church marks the festive start, after which the village gathers for a convivial get-together.
Location in the Schweinfurt Rhön
Wülfershausen is located at the transition between the Bavarian Rhön and the Grabfeld, a flat, fertile region that extends far into Thuringia. The region is characterized by meadows, agriculture, and the Saale river, one of the most important tributaries of the Main. Village and Kirchweih festivals still hold great importance here – they are cultural anchors of a region where traditional ways of life, Franconian dialect, and religious customs are still alive.
A Festival for the Entire Village Community
The Kirchweih brings together returning locals, relatives, and neighboring communities. Those who follow the event calendar of the Wülfershausen municipality will also find the dog show in May and the traditional 'Klappern' (rattling) in Eichenhausen on Good Friday and Holy Saturday – customs that continue to shape the Catholic Saaletal region.
