Three Traditions, One Festival
In the Burgenlandkreis district of the southern state of Saxony-Anhalt, on the steep slopes above the Unstrut river, lies the small town of Laucha an der Unstrut — one of Central Germany's most traditional wine-growing addresses. Here, in the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region, vines have thrived since the 9th century — Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Silvaner, Weißburgunder. And once a year, the town celebrates an unusual combination: the Heimat-, Wein- und Schützenfest.
Three festival traditions, usually celebrated separately elsewhere, come together here to form a comprehensive event — and it works surprisingly well. The Heimatfest provides the parade, community life, and the sense of togetherness of a small town; the Weinfest brings in the regional wines — especially Müller-Thurgau and Bacchus from the steep slopes around Laucha, along with the sparkling and white wines of the Saale-Unstrut vintners; the Schützenfest adds a traditional club accent with the proclamation of the king and a club parade. Three festival circles, one weekend, one festival ground.
Highlights include the grand parade with the marksmen's march, homeland associations, vintners, and school and sports clubs, showcasing historical costumes and turning the entire town into a festive choreography. Added to this is the unique wheelbarrow race — a humorously serious local tradition where teams from homeland associations, fire brigades, and sports clubs race decorated wheelbarrows through the town center. Anyone experiencing Laucha for the first time gets an impression of a vibrantly alive club culture.
The wine enjoyment is the second focus. Laucha and neighboring vintners present their wines directly on the festival grounds — Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Silvaner, Bacchus, Weißburgunder, and red wine specialties like Portugieser and Spätburgunder. Plus sparkling wine from the Hausdorf sparkling wine manufactory. Tastings in open glasses (often the town's official festival glass), conversations with the vintners, and insights into cultivation and production.
A Wine Region with a Long History
Saale-Unstrut, with around 770 hectares of vineyards, is a small but fine wine-growing region. It features steep slopes with dry stone walls that are part of the cultural landscape proposed for UNESCO World Heritage status. Laucha itself, located in the Burgenlandkreis district, is one of the wine-growing centers and belongs to the wine and sparkling wine route. The combination of Heimatfest, wine, and marksmen is more than just folkloric marketing here — it reflects a vibrant local identity. The event is organized by the Lauchaer Heimatverein together with the town; the festival usually takes place in August or September, as the grape harvest approaches.
