Mombach and the Bohnebeitel
Mainz-Mombach is located in the far north of the Mainz city area, directly on the Rhine opposite the Wiesbaden district of Schierstein. With around 13,000 inhabitants, Mombach is an independent, tradition-conscious district with a strong club landscape. Its best-known carnival club, the Mombach Bohnebeitel, is one of the oldest and most prominent guards of the Mainz Fastnacht. Their distinctive uniforms with bean motifs are an indispensable part of every Rosenmontag parade and also characterize the Mombach district parade on Fastnacht Tuesday.
The Parade on Shrove Tuesday
The Mombach parade starts at 2:33 PM and proceeds through the village center of the district. The order is traditional: Bohnebeitel and friendly guards open the parade, followed by marching bands, music groups, floats with political satire and local relevance, and children's groups from local schools and clubs. Unlike the large Rosenmontag parade in the city center, the atmosphere remains familiar: many participants and spectators know each other, the floats often have strong local references, and the throwing of candy is significantly faster than in the mass crowds.
The End of the Kampagne
Fastnacht Tuesday traditionally marks the end of the Mainz Kampagne. While the symbolic end of the carnival season, the "Geldbeutelwaschen" (money bag washing), takes place at midnight in many carnival halls, district parades like Mombach's are the last public open-air highlight. Those who experienced the Rosenmontag parade the day before can enjoy a quieter, but no less carnival-enthusiastic version of the Mainz carnival days here.
Getting There and Practical Information
Mombach is easily accessible by tram (line 50) and bus lines from Mainz main station. Driving by car is not recommended due to road closures in the village center. A ban on glass bottles and weapons applies throughout the parade area.
