Small Advent market on the Wupperinsel and Schloßbergstraße with winter garden and live music
The Schloßbergweihnacht Solingen is an insider tip among NRW's crowded Christmas markets. Instead of monumental large markets (Cologne, Düsseldorf, Aachen), the small Schloßbergweihnacht offers an intimate format: a small market on the Wupperinsel and along Schloßbergstraße, nestled in Solingen's Bergisches cityscape.
The market takes place on the Wupperinsel – a small island formation in the Wupper river – and along Schloßbergstraße. The historic buildings and Solingen's hilly location give the market a special atmosphere. Directly adjacent is the district of Burg an der Wupper, which also hosts a large Advent bazaar during the pre-Christmas season.
The Schloßbergweihnacht explicitly caters to families with children. Hands-on activities include crafts, candle making, Christmas baking, and sing-alongs. Instead of consumer pressure, there's a spirit of participation – children become active participants, not just spectators.
A special highlight is the winter garden in the historic Haus In der Straßen. The stylish property opens its doors for the Schloßbergweihnacht, providing a heated indoor space as a meeting point – ideal for the typically wet and cold weather in the Bergisches Land.
Live music is performed on the festival stage (small, without loud amplification): choirs, brass quintets, singer-songwriters with Christmas repertoire. An atmosphere more reminiscent of a salon than a market.
The exact date for 2026 will be announced shortly. Based on past experience, the Schloßbergweihnacht traditionally takes place on the 1st Advent weekend, so in 2026, it's expected to be on Saturday, November 28, and Sunday, November 29. Opening hours are typically Saturday approx. 2 PM–10 PM, Sunday approx. 11 AM–8 PM.
Solingen is Germany's Blade City, world-renowned for its steel and knife manufacturing (Wüsthof, Zwilling, Solinger brands). Together with Wuppertal and Remscheid, the city forms an economic center in the Bergisches Städtedreieck. With Solingen main station and its location in the hilly landscape between Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Wuppertal, it is easily accessible.
Solingen offers several Christmas markets on the 1st Advent: the large Christmas Market on Mühlenplatz, the Advent Bazaar at Schloss Burg, the Winter Village in Brückenpark Müngsten, and the Schloßbergweihnacht. Those planning a weekend trip can create a small Bergisches Christmas market tour.
The exact date will be communicated via Solingen's city media (Solinger Tageblatt, RGA) and city marketing channels. The Schloßbergweihnacht is considered one of the most charming small Christmas markets in the Bergisches Städtedreieck.
