Open-air summer theatre in the Barfüßerruine — Crime comedy based on Arthur Conan Doyle
The Barfüßerruine is one of Erfurt's most impressive ruins. The former church of the Barfüßer monastery was heavily destroyed in an air raid in 1944 — only the walls of the tall Gothic nave remained standing. Today, these walls form an open-air stage: around 30-meter-high Gothic walls frame an interior space of about 600 square meters, which becomes the theatre performance area. The acoustics are exceptional — the stone walls reflect the sound, and the actors' voices reach the audience clearly. When the sun sets behind the walls on a summer evening and the artificial stage lighting is switched on, a theatrical atmosphere is created that even established theatres struggle to achieve.
In 2026, SommerKomödie Erfurt is staging a crime comedy based on the detective stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock Holmes, the master detective from 221B Baker Street, and his loyal companion Dr. Watson solve a mysterious case — embedded in a comedic production that adapts Conan Doyle's classic for the summer audience. Wit, charm, light suspense, and many winking allusions — the audience will be well entertained without being intellectually overwhelmed. The concept of SommerKomödie is clear: fun open-air theatre — not a reduced, obligatory classic visit, but enjoyable theatrical entertainment.
The seating configuration is simple: 400 seats in the ruin, free seating (early birds get the best spots). Performances run Wednesday to Saturday, typically starting at 8:00 PM or 8:30 PM, depending on light conditions. A sign language performance on August 15th makes a show accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing visitors — a remarkable inclusion detail. In case of rain, performances may be relocated or postponed at short notice depending on the weather (information available on sokoerfurt.de).
In addition to SommerKomödie, SokoErfurt operates a second venue: the Theatersommer in the inner courtyard of the Angermuseum. From July 10th to August 29th, also Wednesday to Saturday, other theatre productions are shown there — mostly smaller formats (solo pieces, chamber theatre, readings with acting elements). The Anger is Erfurt's most beautiful square with Renaissance and Classicist buildings, and the inner courtyard of the Angermuseum is an intimate, sheltered theatre space. This dual concept makes SokoErfurt the largest summer theatre destination in Thuringia.
With around 215,000 inhabitants, Erfurt is the state capital of Thuringia. The city boasts a remarkable theatre scene: the Theater Erfurt (a three-division house with opera, drama, and ballet), the Domstufen-Festspiele (open-air opera on the steps of the Erfurt Cathedral), the Kabarett "Die Arche", the Comödie, and several smaller stages. SommerKomödie complements this scene with its open-air offering — easily accessible, summery, and atmospheric. Anyone visiting Erfurt in the summer should plan for a theatre evening in the Barfüßerruine.

Bring a blanket or cushion — the benches are hard, but the theatre experience is worth the slight discomfort. Waterproof clothing recommended as it's open-air. Combine your theatre evening with Erfurt's classic sights: Krämerbrücke (Europe's oldest continuously inhabited bridge), Erfurt Cathedral with the "Gloriosa" bell, Petersberg Citadel.
