The Domplatz – one of Europe's most beautiful squares

When the lights are switched on in November, Erfurt's Domplatz transforms into one of Germany's most impressive Christmas backdrops. The Gothic ensemble of the Mariendom (Cathedral) and Severikirche (St. Severus Church) rises above the market stalls – an image that, in a Europe-wide survey in 2019, voted the Erfurt Christmas Market among the five most beautiful Christmas markets on the continent, and the top-ranked German market.

Tradition for Centuries

With the 2026 edition, the market turns 176 years old – its roots reaching back to the 19th century. Its current form, firmly established on the Domplatz, has been in place since the 1990s and is closely linked to Erfurt's city identity.

Landmarks and Attractions

  • A 25-meter-high illuminated Christmas tree – the centerpiece of the square
  • The 12-meter-high Christmas pyramid with hand-carved figures
  • An almost life-sized nativity scene with hand-carved figures
  • A carousel and nostalgic rides for children
  • Stalls offering mulled wine, gingerbread, roasted almonds, Thuringian sausages, and regional crafts

Erfurt – Capital of Thuringia

Erfurt is an independent city and the capital of the German state of Thuringia. With its medieval city center, the famous Krämerbrücke (Merchants' Bridge), and the Erfurt Augustinian Monastery (Martin Luther's place of work), Erfurt is one of Germany's most beautiful old towns – especially in Advent.

Christmas Market Erfurt — edition 2026

The 176th edition of the Erfurt Christmas Market transforms the Domplatz into a festively illuminated wonderland for four weeks. Against the backdrop of the Cathedral and St. Severus Church, expect a giant Christmas tree, pyramid, nativity scene, and around 200 stalls featuring Thuringian crafts and culinary traditions.

The 176th edition opens on November 24, 2026, and closes on December 22 after almost a month. Highlights include the official opening ceremony with the lighting of the Christmas decorations, the appearance of the Christ Child on Advent weekends, and the concert program in the Cathedral and St. Severus Church.
