Herrstein's Martinimarkt fills the market square and the village center on November 7 and 8. The weekend of 7.11.26 brings Martinmas markets, a wine fair, a cheese market and a pub festival to Rhineland-Palatinate, and in Herrstein the fireworks go up on Saturday evening, with the lantern parade on Sunday.
Herrstein's Martinimarkt
The Martinimarkt in Herrstein goes back to 1428 and is among the oldest markets in the Hunsrück. It was then held as an annual trading fair around St. Martin's Day. Today stalls with crafts, ceramics, jewelry, wood carvings and Advent decorations line the lanes of the historic village center. Admission is free, the center is pedestrianized and the parking lots are at the edge of the village. The market is open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Farmers and beekeepers from the region sell honey, mead, sausage and cheese, and in the old bakehouse the Herrstein farmhouse bread comes fresh out of the wood-fired oven. On Sunday the St. Martin lantern parade follows: a rider in a red cloak and many children with hand-made lanterns move through the illuminated lanes. For families there is a children's carousel and small hands-on stations.
