Traditional market since 1428 in the medieval village centre – with St. Martin's lantern procession and fireworks
Herrstein is a hidden gem for anyone seeking densely historic village centres in Rhineland-Palatinate. Half-timbered houses, a 13th-century clock tower, a castle square, a blacksmith's barn, and a multitude of restored alleyways give the small town a unique atmosphere in the region. It is precisely this setting that makes the Martinimarkt a special date in the Rhineland-Palatinate event calendar.
The market's origins date back to 1428 when it was held as an annual fair around St. Martin's Day. Today, it is a hybrid of a craft market, a pre-Christmas culinary mile, and a local festival. Stalls selling arts and crafts, ceramics, jewellery, wood carvings, felt work, and Advent decorations are spread throughout the alleyways. Farmers and beekeepers from the region offer honey, mead, sausages, and cheese. The old bakery deserves special attention, where the Herrsteiner farmhouse bread is freshly baked in a wood-fired oven – a classic whose aroma wafts through the entire village centre.
The highlight on Saturday evening is a fireworks display that illuminates the pitch-black sky above the castle square, forming the silhouettes of the half-timbered buildings into an impressive backdrop. On Sunday, the traditional St. Martin's lantern procession follows: a rider in a red coat, many children with homemade lanterns, and a joint procession through the illuminated alleyways keep the old custom alive. A children's carousel and small hands-on stations complete the programme for families.
The exact programme for 2026 will be published by the Herrstein-Rhaunen association in late autumn. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: opening on Saturday morning, full-day market operation, evening fireworks on Saturday, and again full-day market operation on Sunday, with the St. Martin's lantern procession in the evening. A children's carousel complements the offerings, and several food stalls provide hot meals, mulled wine, and punch.
