The 50th Süderelbe Half Marathon through the Altes Land
The Süderelbe Half Marathon reaches its 50th edition on Sunday, November 8, and the Hausbruch-Neugrabener Turnerschaft, one of the largest sports clubs in southern Hamburg, has organised it since the first race in 1977. Start and finish are at the CU Arena in the Neugraben-Fischbek district.
The 1.2 km children's run begins at 9:30 a.m., the half marathon over 21.1 km starts at 10 a.m., the 10 km run at 10:15, and at 10:20 the 5 km run and the 5 km walking race follow.
The course leads via Francop through the Altes Land, northern Germany's largest fruit-growing region, with a turning point in Neuenfelde. It is almost flat and well paved. In November the orchard rows stand bare, and the marsh tracks run along the dikes.
The half marathon is officially measured, so personal bests and qualifying times count, and besides electronic timing and several refreshment points every finisher gets a medal, while race packs are handed out at the CU Arena from the evening before.
The cut-off is 12:30 p.m.
Online registration stays open until November 5 at 6 p.m., and late entries are taken on race day until 9 a.m. The fee is 20 euros for the half marathon, 18 for the 10 km, 12 for the two 5 km events and 5 for the children's run.
A choir contest, a regatta and winter markets
Around the Mittelweg in Harvestehude, choirs from Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein compete on Saturday and Sunday at CHORALLE, the joint state choir competition of both federal states. Children's, youth, women's, men's and mixed choirs perform for expert juries. The best ensembles are recommended for the German Choir Competition, and a special prize is a workshop with the NDR Vokalensemble.
On Saturday, November 7, the Alster hosts the Fari Cup. More than 1,500 athletes race in fours and eights through the Alster canals and onto the Outer Alster, finishing at the boathouse of Ruder Club Favorite Hammonia in Uhlenhorst. Watching from the banks is free.
In Bergedorf the Martinsmarkt spreads around the church of St. Petri und Pauli, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Crafts, books, jewellery and clothing are on sale, with a children's programme of raffle and craft stations, and on Sunday at 5 p.m. the lantern procession sets off with St. Martin on horseback and the TSG Bergedorf marching band. Shops in the town centre are open from 1 to 6 p.m. Admission is free.
Since November 6 the Hamburger Winterdom has been running on the Heiligengeistfeld, with roller coasters and a Ferris wheel, and it is open Saturday from 3 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. and Sunday from 2 to 11 p.m. Admission is free, and a ride costs between 4 and 12 euros.
On November 7 the Wintermarkt StrandPauli opens at the Landungsbrücken, with open fires, mulled wine and kale. It runs until February 14, 2027, and admission is free.
On the Wandsbek market square the Wandsbeker Winterzauber has been open daily from noon to 10 p.m. since October 31. Wooden huts in Alsatian style surround a 400-square-metre ice rink, and 90 minutes cost adults 4 euros. In the Stadtpark, Stadtparkzauber at Landhaus Walter opens Saturday from 2 to 10 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m., with alpine huts, lights and mulled wine.
S-Bahn lines S3 and S31 stop at Neugraben, five minutes on foot from the CU Arena.
