Gourmet market of partner cities Aix-en-Provence and Perugia in Tübingen's Old Town
Tübingen, Aix-en-Provence, and Perugia — three medium-sized university cities in Germany, France, and Italy, connected by city partnerships. These partnerships are not just dusty documents in town hall drawers: they become tangible every September when Tübingen's Old Town becomes a shared marketplace for five days. The Umbrian-Provençal Market celebrates its 30th edition in 2026 — an anniversary that will also be reflected in the program.
A total of around 77 stalls covering approximately 10,000 m² of market space, spread across Holzmarkt, Marktplatz, Krumme Brücke, Kirchgasse, and the side streets of the Old Town. From Provence (Aix-en-Provence) come 21 vendors with olive oil, lavender, honey, cheese, tapenade, Calissons (Provençal almond pastries), soaps, fabrics, and ceramics. From Perugia (Umbria), 21 food stalls present truffles, pasta, salumi, Pecorino, pasta products, olive oil, Vino Sagrantino, Tiramisù, and chocolate from the Perugina workshops. In addition, around 35 Tübingen shops and manufacturers complement the event.
On Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM, a free children's festival takes place in the courtyard of Bürgheim: skateboarding workshops, craft activities, face painting, games. A program that opens the market to families — and conveys the concept of city partnerships to the next generation.
On Sunday, September 20, 2026, the Tübingen Erbe Run starts at 11:30 AM in Wilhelmstraße — a running event through the Old Town. In parallel, Tübingen's shops open in the afternoon (1 PM–6 PM) for Sunday shopping. The combination of the market, the run, and shopping makes Sunday traditionally the busiest day.
With around 92,000 inhabitants, Tübingen is home to one of Germany's oldest universities (founded in 1477) and belongs to the Tübingen district, in the state of Baden-Württemberg. The university city maintains active city partnerships with Aix-en-Provence, Perugia, Durham (England), Petrozavodsk (Russia), and others. The Umbrian-Provençal Market is the most visible result of this partnership work — and attracts over 100,000 visitors to the Old Town every year.
The anniversary year 2026 — the 30th edition. Tübingen's Old Town, from Holzmarkt to Marktplatz and Krumme Brücke, becomes a European gourmet stage. Provençal and Umbrian specialties dominate the offerings, with Tübingen stands providing local additions. The market celebrates the city partnership with Aix-en-Provence and Perugia — university cities with a similar size and identity to Tübingen itself.
