Film festival for International Women's Day with ten award-winning films from around the world
The FrauenFilmTage Tübingen were initiated in 2019 by the Tübingen city group of the human rights organization TERRE DES FEMMES — on the occasion of International Women's Day on March 8. The 7th edition in 2026 runs from Wednesday, February 25, to Sunday, March 1, 2026. The program: around ten award-winning documentaries and feature films from around the world, dealing with the life situations of women, girls, and non-binary people — against violence, against patriarchal structures, for self-determination.
The opening film on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, is "Girls Don't Cry" by Tübingen director Sigrid Klausmann. The film accompanies six resilient girls from Chile, South Korea, Serbia, Tanzania, and other countries on their path to self-assertion. Producer Walter Sittler (known for his acting career and long-standing social commitment) will be present at the Tübingen premiere.
A central feature of the FrauenFilmTage is the combination of film and discussion: after the screenings, filmmakers, activists, scientists, and affected individuals engage in conversation with the audience. At the 2025 edition, guests included Manizha Bakhtari (Afghan ambassador to Austria) for the film "The Last Ambassador", filmmaker Kevin Schmutzler for "Nawi" (Kenya's Oscar submission 2025), and trauma therapist Dr. Ingeborg Kraus for "9-Monats-Vertrag".
The program of the FrauenFilmTage is thematically focused: violence against women, domestic violence, sexual exploitation, female genital mutilation (FGM), child marriage, girls' rights, LGBTQ+ rights, migration and gender, war and women. The films come from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe — TERRE DES FEMMES uses the festival to showcase the international dimension of women's rights and make concrete demands visible.
The venues are Kino Museum (Am Stadtgraben 2, 72070 Tübingen) — one of the oldest art-house cinemas in Southern Germany — and the d.a.i. Tübingen, the German-American Institute on Karlstraße 3. The d.a.i. regularly offers film screenings and discussions in the context of German-American cultural work even after the festival.
According to TERRE DES FEMMES, the 2025 edition attracted over 1,100 visitors — several screenings were sold out. This is a remarkable achievement for a thematically focused film festival in a medium-sized university town and shows that the format works. For 2026, the organizers aim to expand the program and host more film discussions.
