Three days of light celebrations in the Renaissance city
Torgau, located in the Nordsachsen district, is one of Central Germany's most significant Renaissance cities. Its landmark is Hartenfels Castle, the only largely preserved castle complex from the early German Renaissance. The "Torgau leuchtet" city festival honors this cultural identity with a three-day celebration of light and culture that brings the historic city center to life by day and night. In 2026, it takes place from October 2 to 4; in 2025, it was held at the end of September.
The light parade — Saturday's highlight
The centerpiece of "Torgau leuchtet" is the light parade on Saturday evening, starting at 7:00 PM. Under the motto "From Torgau, for Torgau," citizens march through the old town with lanterns, glowing costumes, illuminated vehicles, and handmade light installations. If you would like to participate, please register in advance via email at [email protected]. The parade route passes by St. Mary's Church, the market square, and Hartenfels Castle.
Medieval market, cultural quarter, and shopping night
The Hartenfels Castle courtyard hosts the "Sündenfrei" medieval market, featuring artisans, musicians, performers, and historical cuisine. The cultural quarter around St. Mary's Church offers music, exhibitions, and interactive activities, with additional event hubs at the Fleischmarkt and the Kulturbastion. The shopping night on Friday features extended opening hours at 22 local shops. The festival also includes a fair, concerts, and a museum night.
Saxony, Nordsachsen district, and Torgau
Torgau is part of the Nordsachsen district and is situated on the right bank of the Elbe, about 50 km northeast of Leipzig. First mentioned in 1119, the city's Renaissance old town is almost entirely preserved and is a protected heritage site. Culturally and historically, Torgau is linked to the Reformation, the meeting of American and Soviet troops in 1945 ("Elbe Day"), and GDR history (the Torgau closed youth workhouse). "Torgau leuchtet" is one of the most important city festivals in the Nordsachsen region.
