Fairytale Christmas Market in the Courtyard of Hartenfels Castle
Torgau is the secret capital of the Renaissance on the Elbe: Hartenfels Castle with its famous Great Wendelstein, the castle chapel as Luther's first Protestant church, and the magnificent courtyard form the backdrop for a Christmas market that consciously sets itself apart from the mass markets in Dresden or Leipzig. Instead of size, the Schlossweihnacht focuses on narrative, atmosphere, and attention to detail.
Around 40 carefully curated stalls offer arts and crafts and regional cuisine. The supporting program includes fairytale readings in the Castle Museum, creative workshops for children, joint Advent singing, medieval spectacles with jugglers and minstrels, a historical "Fairytale Cinema," a playhouse, and craft activities. Each year, a different fairytale figure is the focus — Dornröschen (Sleeping Beauty) gives the market its name, but the changing theme keeps the concept fresh.
Those who visit the market in the castle courtyard walk on the ground where Martin Luther consecrated the first Protestant church in 1544. Hartenfels is arguably the most important Renaissance castle complex in Central Germany, and the courtyard — framed by the Great Wendelstein and the wing buildings — provides the market with a backdrop that no other Advent market in the region can offer. The limitation to one weekend and the concentration on a closed inner courtyard enhance the immersive experience.
Torgau is located in the Nordsachsen district on the Elbe, between Leipzig and Wittenberg. During the Reformation, the city was the residence of the Ernestine Wettins and a meeting place for Luther and Melanchthon. Those who combine the Schlossweihnacht with a stroll through the city will discover one of Saxony's best-preserved Renaissance ensembles — and the Advent decorations in the old town enhance this impression.
Following the evaluation of the 2026 public survey (56% voted for the name "Dornröschen"), the city of Torgau is continuing the Schlossweihnacht with the established concept: focus on one Advent weekend, the castle courtyard as the main venue, around 40 curated stalls, a dense supporting program with readings, music, and medieval performances. Improvements identified in the survey — such as better integration with the market square via Schloßstraße, a central deposit system, and more mulled wine offerings — are to be implemented.
