About Night of the Bakehouses
Night of the Bakehouses — edition 2026
One Night, Six Bakehouses, Six Associations
On Saturday, July 25, 2026, from 5 PM to 11 PM, Rudersberg invites you to the 5th Night of the Bakehouses. The historic bakehouses in the six districts — Rudersberg (school center), Lindental, Michelau, Asperglen, Schlechtbach, and Krehwinkel — open their doors. In each bakehouse, local associations take over the baking area: music clubs, sports clubs, heritage societies, or volunteer teams.
In the stone ovens — some over 400 years old — bread, onion cake, salt cake, pizzas, and other specialties are baked on-site. Visitors can observe the baking process, talk to the bakers, see the historic ovens in action — and enjoy the freshly baked specialties right away. The free shuttle bus, running every 20–30 minutes to all six locations, allows for a bakehouse tour through the Swabian Forest.

Six Districts, Six Bakehouses, One Night
On Saturday, July 25, 2026, from 5 PM to 11 PM, the 5th Night of the Bakehouses Rudersberg takes place. An unusual event happening simultaneously in the six districts of Rudersberg: Rudersberg (main town), Lindental, Michelau, Asperglen, Schlechtbach, and Krehwinkel. In each district, the historic bakehouse opens its doors — some are over 400 years old, making them a living piece of Swabian Forest history.
The Bakehouse Tradition in the Swabian Forest
Until the 20th century, bakehouses were the center of village life. In an era when homes didn't have their own ovens, farming families sent their dough to the community bakehouse on designated days. While the dough turned into bread in the stone ovens, the women would meet, exchange news, make plans, and sing songs. The bakehouse was a meeting point, newsroom, and social space all in one — a function lost with industrialization and modern ovens.
The Night of the Bakehouses — A Lively Revival
The Night of the Bakehouses revitalizes this lost tradition for one night a year. In the six bakehouses of Rudersberg, bread, onion cake, salt cake, pizzas, and other specialties are baked on-site by local associations (music clubs, sports clubs, heritage societies, countrywomen's groups). Visitors can see the bakehouse interior, talk to the bakers, witness the historic stone ovens from 1620 or 1750 in action — and, of course, enjoy the freshly baked specialties.
Free Shuttle Bus Through Six Villages
A free shuttle bus connects the six districts, serving all bakehouses throughout the night. Visitors can start at one bakehouse, try the local specialties, then hop on the bus to the next. A culinary bakehouse tour through the Swabian Forest — combined with strolls between the bakehouses and summery sunset views over the hills.
Rudersberg — A Municipality in the Swabian Forest
Rudersberg, a municipality in the Rems-Murr district with around 11,500 inhabitants, is located in the Swabian Forest northeast of Stuttgart. The municipality consists of the main town Rudersberg and six other districts, five of which are involved in the bakehouse night. Rudersberg is known for the hilly landscape of the Swabian Forest, its hiking and cycling trails, and its intact rural structure with an active club scene. The Night of the Bakehouses makes this club scene and rural heritage accessible to the public.
