Annual commemoration of April 25, 1945, when American and Soviet soldiers met on the Elbe — April 25, 2026
On that Wednesday afternoon, April 25, 1945, soldiers of the 1st US Army and the 5th Guards Army of the Red Army met on the destroyed Elbe bridge near Torgau. A reconnaissance troop under Lieutenant William D. Robertson had fought its way east from the American side and encountered Soviet troops under Lieutenant Alexander Silvashko on the Elbe riverbank. The meeting — documented photographically, reported worldwide — symbolized the union of the two main Allied fronts and the de facto collapse of German defenses. The war in Europe ended a few weeks later.
At the spot where the soldiers met in 1945, the city of Torgau erected the 'Monument of the Encounter' in 1969 — a central sculpture visualizing alliance and hope for peace. During the GDR era, Elbe Day was an official state commemoration celebrated with large events. After 1990, its character changed: political staging evolved into a much more open, international commemoration with representatives from the USA, Russia, and other countries. The historical message of the meeting — a symbol of understanding across all political divisions — remains central.
The daily schedule follows an established rhythm: In the morning, the solemn memorial service at the Monument with speeches by the Lord Mayor, representatives of the former Allies (US Consulate Leipzig, Russian representatives, British and French diplomats), laying of wreaths, and a minute of silence. Afterwards, the program opens up: Live music with a focus on Jazz and Dixieland (the music of the American liberators becomes an element of remembrance here), a club fair with Torgau clubs and initiatives, a flea market on the Elbe riverbank, and a dedicated children's program. Admission to the entire program is free.
Torgau, with around 19,000 inhabitants, is the district capital of Nordsachsen district and one of the most important Reformation cities in Central Germany. Hartenfels Castle — the favorite castle of Frederick the Wise, where Martin Luther consecrated the first Protestant church of the Reformation — is a UNESCO World Heritage candidate. The old town with its Renaissance townhouses, the market square, and the Elbe riverbank form a harmonious backdrop for the commemoration. Visitors to Elbe Day should plan half a day for the city.
On Saturday, April 25, 2026, the historic encounter between American and Soviet soldiers on the Elbe in Torgau will be commemorated for the 81st time. The annual commemoration will again be held in 2026 as a compact one-day event at the original location — at the 'Monument of the Encounter' directly on the Elbe riverbank.
The day begins in the morning with the official commemoration ceremony: speeches by the Lord Mayor, representatives of the former Allies, laying of wreaths, and a minute of silence. Afterwards, the program opens to the general public — Jazz and Dixieland concerts (the music of the American troops, which becomes an element of remembrance here), a club fair with Torgau clubs and initiatives, a flea market along the Elbe riverbank, and a children's program. The program concludes in the late afternoon.
Program details with times will be published shortly before the event on torgau-tourismus.de.
Free admission to the entire program. Food and drinks on site at market prices, flea market goods depending on negotiation.
