Hildburghausen — District Capital in Southern Thuringia
Hildburghausen is the district capital of the district of the same name in southern Thuringia, on the Werra river. With around 11,000 inhabitants, the town is manageable but historically significant: it was once the residential capital of the Duchy of Saxe-Hildburghausen (1680–1826). The historic old town around the market square with the town hall, town church, and ramparts is well-preserved and forms the ideal backdrop for a town festival.
Two Days of Altstadtfest
The Altstadtfest transforms the city center into a festival mile on the last weekend of July. Several stages are set up on the market square and in the adjacent streets. Live bands of various styles — from rock and pop to Schlager and folk music — play during the day and in the evening. Market stalls with arts and crafts and regional specialties line the alleys. A dedicated family program with activities for children complements the offerings. The mix of Volksfest (folk festival) and Stadtfest (town festival) is classic — and an important summer date for the South Thuringia region.
City, Clubs, Retail — Hand in Hand
The festival is organized jointly by the city of Hildburghausen, local clubs (sports clubs, shooting clubs, music clubs), and downtown retailers. This broad support structure ensures a diverse program that appeals to various generations. Shops often open longer, some sell on Sundays (verkaufsoffener Sonntag — Sunday shopping), and restaurants expand their outdoor seating.
South Thuringia and the Werra Valley
In the state of Thuringia, Hildburghausen district, the city is located in a region known for nature tourism (Thuringian Forest, Werra Valley) and traditional festivals. Nearby Eisfeld also celebrates its famous Kuhschwanzfest (Whitsun). In summer, the Altstadtfest Hildburghausen is one of the most important Volksfest dates in southern Thuringia. Visitors come from Suhl, Coburg (Bavaria), Schmalkalden-Meiningen, and the entire Hildburghausen region.
