Eichenberg — a village in the Hildburghausen district
Eichenberg is a small municipality in the Feldstein administrative district in Hildburghausen, in the south of the state of Thuringia, on the edge of the Thuringian Slate Mountains. The region is characterized by agriculture and forestry; village life revolves around a few major annual events — and the Kirmes is one of them.
Kirmes Tradition
The Kirmes (also called "Kerwa" in southern Thuringia) has its roots in the church consecration festival (Kirchweih) — today it is a largely secular Volksfest with a festival tent, dancing, and plenty of beer. The Eichenberg Kirmes at the end of October follows this tradition: on the weekend, the village association organizes the festival, locals and guests from the region meet in the festival tent for live music, dancing, and hearty cuisine.
Program and Atmosphere
Traditionally, it opens on Friday evening with the tapping of the beer keg. Saturday evening features the Kirmes dance with a live band; Sunday's program is family-friendly with morning pint, lunch, and afternoon music. Bratwurst, Schäufele, Klöße, and beer from regional breweries — Eichenberg maintains a down-to-earth festival culture that is valued in the region.
