Franconian Kerwa with Krenfleisch as the culinary highlight
Krenfleisch (or "horseradish meat") is a traditional Franconian specialty and the culinary heart of many Kerwa festivals in the Bayreuth region. Boiled beef is typically served with freshly grated horseradish, bread, potatoes, or vegetables — a hearty, spicy home-style dish that is standard at Kerwas, festivals, and in Franconian brewery inns.
The municipality of Heinersreuth in the district of Bayreuth cultivates a particularly dense Kerwa culture. The 2026 event calendar includes, among others:
While most Kerwas in Franconia offer Krenfleisch as one of several specialties, the Krenfleisch-Kerwa Heinersreuth places this dish squarely at the center. The concept thus follows the example of well-known Bayreuth events such as the Altstädter Kerwa and the Gässlaskerwa at Manns Bräu, which are also known for their Krenfleisch tradition.
Heinersreuth is located immediately west of Bayreuth in the Upper Franconian district of Bayreuth — nestled between the valley of the Roter Main river and the Franconian Switzerland. The proximity to the Wagner city of Bayreuth and to the Upper Franconian brewery strongholds makes the region one of the densest Kerwa landscapes in Bavaria.
The Krenfleisch-Kerwa 2026 is part of the Heinersreuth municipality's event calendar and follows the proven Franconian Kerwa tradition: hearty home-style cooking, Franconian draft beer, club catering in a convivial atmosphere.
The exact venue, schedule, and any live music programs will be published by the municipality in the Heinersreuth event calendar shortly before the date. Immediately following, on July 18–19, the Sportplatzkerwa will take place, offering Kerwa enthusiasts a complete weekend of Franconian traditional events.
Detailed program, exact times, and venue will be published in the event calendar of the Municipality of Heinersreuth.
Heinersreuth is located directly west of Bayreuth. By car via the A9 (exit Bayreuth-Süd) and then via the B85. By train, the nearest station is Bayreuth Hauptbahnhof, from there continue by bus.
Free admission. Krenfleisch and drinks directly at the stand at usual Kerwa prices.
Krenfleisch is traditionally served warm — it's best to order right after the opening in the afternoon when the meat is fresh.
