Traditional Sonnwendfeuer and Kanzfeuer in the municipality of Heinersreuth — Johannisfeuer in the Bayreuth region
The Sonnwendfeuer (Midsummer bonfires) are among the oldest customs in Central Europe, dating back to pre-Christian solstice celebrations. With Christianization, the custom was shifted to St. John's Day (June 24th), and St. John the Baptist was associated with the symbol of fire. The tradition is particularly alive in Upper Franconia — dozens of bonfires burn on the hills every year in the region around Bayreuth (city and district).
In Franconian dialect, the Sonnwend- or Johannisfeuer is often called "Kanzfeuer" or "Kanzfeierla". The term is regionally common in Upper Franconia and refers to the same traditional practice. Both terms — Sonnwendfeuer and Kanzfeuer — denote the large, evening bonfire around the summer solstice.
In the municipality of Heinersreuth (around 4,200 inhabitants, Bayreuth district, directly west of the city of Bayreuth), several bonfires are lit every year in different districts, organized by various clubs:
The typical course follows a set pattern: Days in advance, club members stack the wood into a high pile — often several meters high. In the evening, the village community gathers on a hill or an open space. There are grilled bratwurst, beer from the tap, often live music or a DJ. When darkness falls, the fire is lit — the highlight of the evening is the moment when the flames shoot meters high into the summer sky. The gathering can continue well into the night.
Heinersreuth is located in the hilly foothills of the Fichtelgebirge, on the Rotmain river west of Bayreuth. The municipality comprises the districts of Heinersreuth, Altenplos, Unterwaiz, and several small hamlets. The active club life — hiking clubs, fire departments, sports clubs, Bund Naturschutz (Nature Conservation Association) — ensures that many old traditions like the Sonnwendfeuer are still celebrated every year. The dates are published in the municipality's event calendar.
The 2026 dates are officially registered in the event calendar of the municipality of Heinersreuth: June 19 (Friday) and June 20 (Saturday), 2026. Another Kanzfeuer may additionally take place at the end of June (for the St. John's Day weekend around June 24th).
The exact locations and start times will be announced in mid-June 2026 by the respective clubs and via the municipality's event calendar. As a rule of thumb, the bonfire is lit at nightfall (approx. 10 PM), and catering starts from 6 – 7 PM.
Specific program details will be published in June 2026 via the municipal website and the regional press.
Heinersreuth is located directly west of Bayreuth, easily accessible via the B 22 / B 85 federal roads. Bus lines run from Bayreuth main station to the districts. The specific bonfire locations are signposted via the event announcements from the municipality and the clubs.
No admission fee. Food and drinks are served on-site by the clubs at local prices — proceeds benefit the respective club funds.
Published via heinersreuth.de/veranstaltungen and the Bayreuth daily press (Bayreuther Tagblatt, Nordbayerischer Kurier) around mid-June.
