Cross-border Rosenmontag procession from Alsdorf to Niederweis in the Südeifel
The Rosenmontag Procession Alsdorf-Niederweis is a special feature of Eifel Karneval: Two closely connected Eifel villages are jointly organising a cross-border Karneval procession on Rosenmontag, February 16, 2026. Starting at 2:11 PM, the procession forms in Alsdorf and winds its way with floats, walking groups, and music bands along the connecting road to Niederweis. The two villages in the Südeifel maintain a traditional Karneval partnership, impressively manifested in this joint procession.
The procession is part of the Eifel Karneval tradition, which is particularly vibrantly cultivated in the Südeifel municipality.
Alsdorf and Niederweis are only a few kilometres apart in the Südeifel Nature Park. Instead of each village having its own small procession, the Karneval communities of both villages decided to organise a larger, more attractive procession together. This cross-border solution is a pragmatic and successful response to demographic challenges in the rural Eifel region — strong together.
On Rosenmontag, February 16, 2026, the procession starts at 2:11 PM in Alsdorf. The procession entries form at the village entrance and then proceed towards Niederweis. Karneval floats with local, regional, and current political themes, dance troupes, walking groups, marching bands, and music bands from the Südeifel form the backbone of the parade. Families stand along the roadside, Kamelle (sweets) and Strüssjer (small bouquets) are distributed generously, and the atmosphere is jubilant.
In Niederweis, the procession disbands, and the Karneval community celebrates the festive highlight of the Eifel session in local pubs and at mobile catering stands. Singing, dancing, and celebrating continue late into the evening.
The Eifel Fastnacht (Carnival) differs from the large-city Rhineland Carnival through its down-to-earth nature. The speeches are in dialect, the floats are built by community groups, and the music bands come from the village or the neighbourhood. This authenticity is what makes the Karneval Alsdorf-Niederweis so appealing.
The 2026 Rosenmontag procession from Alsdorf to Niederweis is one of the jointly supported highlights of the Eifel Karneval season in the Südeifel municipality. Precisely at 2:11 PM, the procession starts at the Alsdorf village entrance and proceeds with Karneval floats, walking groups, marching bands, and costumed participants towards Niederweis. The route leads through picturesque Eifel landscapes, past farms and village trees. Afterwards, the celebration continues in Niederweis until the evening.
The Karneval partnership between Alsdorf and Niederweis is a model for lived community in a rural area. Instead of two small processions, an attractive, cross-border procession is created — all with traditional, authentic Eifel dialect and community group work.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organiser in January. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
