Traditional funfair and market in Hamburg's West
The Nienstedtener Herbstmarkt has been a firm fixture in Hamburg's annual market calendar for years. On Nienstedtener Marktplatz, the quiet district in the Altona borough transforms into a classic funfair and market location for four days — with rides, carousels for children, market stalls with regional specialities, and arts and crafts.
Unlike the large Hamburg funfairs (Dom, Schlagermove, BilleVue), the Nienstedtener Herbstmarkt has a distinctly family character. The manageable market square features classic children's carousels, a children's area with play equipment, and farm shop stalls with regional producers. The atmosphere is rather quiet and cosy.
Nienstedten is a traditional district in the Altona borough — between Othmarschen and Blankenese, with villas, old farmhouses, and its own St. Nicolai Church from the 18th century. The market square forms the historic centre. The Herbstmarkt is the autumn edition of the Nienstedtener Jahrmarkt — there is also the Nienstedtener Frühjahrsmarkt in spring.
The organiser is the State Association of the Mobile Trade and Showmen Hamburg e.V. — the umbrella organisation that coordinates numerous Hamburg funfairs and markets. Administrative body: Altona District Office.
From September 18 to 21, 2026, Nienstedtener Marktplatz will once again transform into a classic Hamburg market. The market opens on Friday afternoon and runs until Monday evening — the market square becomes a place for strolling, tasting, and enjoying the autumn atmosphere.
As is customary at traditional markets, rides, carousels for the little ones, and play equipment mingle with farm shop stalls and arts and crafts on Nienstedtener Marktplatz. Regional producers and specialities dominate the stall offerings. There is a dedicated children's area on the market square.
Specific opening hours and programme changes will be communicated on landesverband.org/termine.
