Pulvermann's Grave and Horse Swap — five days of world-class equestrian sport in Klein Flottbek
In the west of Hamburg, in the Klein Flottbek district of Altona, lies the Derby Park on Baron-Voght-Straße. The German Show Jumping Derby has been held here since 1920 — one of the oldest and most prestigious equestrian events in the world. Anyone who has stood before the famous obstacle Pulvermann's Grave knows why riders and horses push their limits here: a huge earth bank with a water ditch at its base, which remains the toughest obstacle in international show jumping to this day.
Since the tournament's modernization, the Show Jumping Derby is no longer alone: it is complemented by the German Dressage Derby, held at CDI5* level. The highlight: in the dressage final, the top four riders swap horses and perform the same tests on unfamiliar animals. This is pure equestrian sport — without the horse you know, without routine, just skill.
The 2026 edition is the 43rd of the modern derby format under the main sponsor Al Shira'aa. The tournament director is Matthias Alexander Rath, a top rider and Olympic participant himself, who has been modernizing and internationally positioning the event since Schafhof Connects took over.
NDR and ZDF broadcast selected competitions live; the Derby is one of the most widely watched equestrian events in German-speaking countries. More than 90,000 visitors come to the Derby Park over five days. The park is located at the Klein Flottbek S-Bahn station, offering excellent public transport connections within Hamburg.
The Derby is as much a part of Hamburg's spring as the harbor is to the city. The May days in Klein Flottbek are a family ritual for many Hamburg residents — whether as equestrian fans or as picnic visitors in the shade of the old trees surrounding the course. The Derby Park itself is a small idyll in the west of the city — and the center of the international equestrian world during Derby week.
The 43rd edition under main sponsor Al Shira'aa continues the modernized format of previous years. Tournament director Matthias Alexander Rath, himself an internationally successful dressage rider, has consolidated the Derby economically in recent years and sharpened the program.
The organizer is Schafhof Connects in cooperation with the Norddeutscher and Flottbeker riding clubs. The competitions will be held on the three arenas of the Derby Park, with the famous Show Jumping Derby course as the centerpiece.
