Plant Market at the Botanical Garden
The Loki Schmidt Garden is the Botanical Garden of the University of Hamburg in Klein Flottbek — one of the most important botanical collections in Northern Germany. Named after Loki Schmidt, Helmut Schmidt's wife, who was committed to nature conservation and botany throughout her life. Once a year, the plant and information fair opens the park-like grounds for a special market.
What to Buy and Learn
At the market, you'll find herbs, flowering plants, perennials, grasses, and shrubs — offered by Hamburg nurseries, specialist nurseries, and private plant lovers. The selection is more curated than a usual garden market, focusing on native and ecologically sound plants.
Nature Conservation Info Stands
What makes the fair special: the nature conservation info stands. Hamburg associations, foundations, and scientists from the fields of botany, horticulture, and biodiversity are on site to advise visitors on specific gardening questions, setting up nature-oriented gardens, plant selection for dry and wet locations, and more.
Klein Flottbek and the Altona District
Klein Flottbek is located in the Altona district in western Hamburg, between Othmarschen and Nienstedten. The Loki Schmidt Garden covers approximately 23 hectares and is accessible via Ohnhorststraße. The fair is organized by the Society of Friends of the Botanical Garden Hamburg e.V. — the garden's support association.
