Wine Festival with a Cultural Monument Ambiance
The Wine Festival at the Wörschweiler Monastery Ruins is one of the most beautiful open-air wine festivals in the Saarpfalz district. It has been held annually on October 3rd – German Unity Day – on the Klosterberg in the Wörschweiler district of Homburg since 2012. The event is organised by the Wörschweiler Monastery Ruins Foundation and the Friends of the Wörschweiler Monastery Ruins Association. Both are committed to the preservation and revitalization of the medieval monastery ruins.
The Wörschweiler Monastery Ruins
The Cistercian monastery Wörschweiler was founded in the 12th century and dissolved in the 16th century during the Reformation. What remains are impressive wall remnants, a preserved west wing, and the famous Klosterberg with a wide view over the Bliestal. Today, the ruins are a local recreation area and a cultural meeting place – concerts, weddings, and open-air theatre are held here.
What's on Offer
- Palatinate wines from a local vintner for tasting and purchase
- Palatinate specialities – Saumagen, Leberknödel, Pfälzer Wurstplatte (liver dumpling, Palatinate sausage platter)
- Saarland classics – Lyoner, Schwenker, Flammkuchen (sausage, grilled meat, flatbread)
- Homemade cakes in the afternoon
- Live music from 11 am – usually with regional music groups, often musicians from Zweibrücken
Combine with a Hiking Day
The monastery ruins are located on the Saarland Circular Hiking Trail. Those who combine the wine festival with a hike can explore the surroundings on the Klosterberg circular trail in about two hours – through scattered orchards and oak forests with views of Homburg and the Bliestal. A nice idea to combine the enjoyment of wine in the afternoon with some exercise.
Homburg and the Klosterberg
Homburg is the district and university town of the Saarpfalz district. The Wörschweiler district is located on the eastern outskirts on the Klosterberg. The location between Saarland and the Palatinate shapes its character – the wine festival is an expression of this cross-border region: Saarland gastronomy and Palatinate wine in peaceful coexistence.
Who Should Visit
For wine connoisseurs who want to experience an authentic Palatinate wine festival without tourist crowds. For families who want to combine a quiet day of hiking with a atmospheric lunch. For history and architecture enthusiasts who want to explore impressive monastery ruins on the side.
