Advent market at a baroque castle ruin in the Saarpfalz district
The Gustavsburg in Jägersburg is one of the hidden gems of the Saarpfalz district. Built in the 18th century as a hunting lodge for Duke Gustav Samuel Leopold of Palatinate-Zweibrücken, later burned down and preserved as a ruin, it now forms a romantic park by the Schlossweiher (palace pond). Once a year, on the 3rd Advent weekend, it becomes the backdrop for a Christmas market that, without exaggeration, is considered one of the most atmospheric in Saarland.
The event is organized by the Jägersburg local council in cooperation with the city of Homburg. Unlike commercial markets, only local associations, schools, kindergartens, and non-profit organizations run the market. They set up their huts in and around the castle ruins, each with its own profile: handmade Advent decorations, toy bazaar, mulled wine stand, cookie baking activity, bratwurst grill. Proceeds remain in the district and fund association activities or social projects.
Over the two days, there is an accompanying Advent program: choir performances, children's choirs from Jägersburg schools, music from local associations, often a visit from St. Nicholas for the children. The atmosphere is personal – you meet neighbors, know the exhibitors, smell the mulled wine and the scent of fir trees, see the lights reflected in the Schlossweiher.
Jägersburg is one of the most charming districts of the district town of Homburg. Unlike the bustling city center with its university hospital and industry, Jägersburg appears rural and baroque: palace park, pond, old avenue, small houses, local inns. If you want to experience Saarland in its quieter version, this is the place to be.
The district town of Homburg offers two markets during Advent: the large Christkindl-Markt in the city center and the more intimate Jägersburg market at the Gustavsburg. Those who visit both will experience two very different atmospheres: urban-festive versus rural-romantic. A combination that can be well spread over a long Advent weekend.
The exact program schedule and opening hours will be published in November 2026 on the Homburg city website.
Free admission. Food and drinks at the association stands.
By train to Homburg Hauptbahnhof, then bus towards Jägersburg. By car: A6 exit Homburg, then follow signs for Jägersburg / Gustavsburg. Parking available at the Schlosspark.
Free admission. Food, drinks, and gifts are purchased directly at the association and institution stands.
Evenings are particularly beautiful – the lighting of the castle ruin only comes into its own after dark. Sturdy footwear is recommended due to the uneven paths in the Schlosspark. A combination with a visit to the Christkindl-Markt in Homburg city center is recommended.
