Village community market with St. Nicholas, mulled wine, and laser show on the village square
While the district and university town of Homburg hosts its large St. Nicholas market on the historic market square, the district of Bruchhof-Sanddorf celebrates its own, much smaller market on a Saturday in Advent – and with a dedication that is second to none. The organizer is the 'Association of Associations and Clubs', a coalition of almost all groups active in the district.
The list of participating clubs reads like a cross-section of Saarland village life:
Traditionally on a Saturday in December on the village square next to the school gymnasium. In 2025, the market opened on November 22nd from 3 PM, with the arrival of St. Nicholas at 4:30 PM. The exact date for 2026 will be published as usual in late autumn on the websites homburg.de and bruchhof-sanddorf.de – a Saturday in December 2026 is expected.
Classic Advent offerings in a village-appropriate format: mulled wine and children's punch, bratwurst and Lyoner sausage, crêpes and waffles, cookies and stollen, along with small handicraft stalls. St. Nicholas brings gifts for the children, and there is traditionally a raffle as well. A laser show or light spectacle sometimes rounds off the evening.
Bruchhof-Sanddorf is the second-largest district of Homburg, east of the town center, somewhat outside in a rural location. Anyone living in or visiting Homburg knows the district primarily through its school landscape and the nearby Gut Königsbruch. The rural location, in particular, gives the market its special character – more village center than city neighborhood.
In the Saarpfalz district – where Saarland and Palatinate meet – Advent is a serious business. Homburg itself will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its central St. Nicholas market in 2026, and dozens of local district markets will open all around. Bruchhof-Sanddorf is one of the most charming of them.
The exact date for 2026 will be announced at short notice in late autumn by the Bruchhof-Sanddorf community association and the city of Homburg. A Saturday in December 2026 is expected.
The organizer is the district's 'Association of Associations and Clubs', which bundles practically all local associations.
The exact program for 2026 will be published in the weeks before the date. Based on previous years:
