Arts and crafts at the Gustavsburg — the late summer market in Homburg's Jägersburg district
The Gustavsburg in Jägersburg is one of the lesser-known gems of the Saarpfalz district: originally built as a hunting lodge, it gave the district its name and today, along with its waters and castle park, offers a special setting for events. Here, the Jägersburg local council annually hosts the Arts and Crafts Market in early September — a small but carefully curated weekend that has long been a must-attend event for the Saarland-Pfalz arts and crafts scene.
Unlike large folk festival markets, the Jägersburg Arts and Crafts Market focuses on a deliberate selection of exhibitors. The list of previous editions included potters, woodturners, glassblowers, jewelry artists, leatherworkers, bookbinders, felt artists, woodcarvers, and basket weavers — handmade products, often with live demonstrations, allowing visitors to witness the creation process. The format is family-friendly without being kitschy; admission is free.
The market typically includes an accompanying program: musical contributions from regional ensembles on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, guided tours of the Gustavsburg grounds, and occasional workshops for children (pottery wheel, candle making). Food is provided with regional specialties — coffee and cake from the local association, sausage and beer from the Saarwellinger or Homburger brewery distributors, and Flammkuchen from a mobile wood-fired oven.
Jägersburg is a district of Homburg, the district town of Saarpfalz. Its location on the edge of the Schlossweiher (castle pond) and the adjacent nature reserve makes the district a popular weekend destination — and has been since the 18th century when the Gustavsburg was built as a ducal Palatinate hunting lodge. Those visiting the market should also plan a walk around the pond.
The market attracts an audience specifically looking for handmade gifts — people from Saarbrücken and Kaiserslautern mingle with weekend excursionists from the Palatinate, Westerwald, and Alsace. The atmosphere is calm, almost meditative: no sales announcements, but demonstrations of sound bowls, the scent of beeswax and sandalwood, and children playing on the lawn in front of the castle while parents linger at the stalls. Those seeking a quieter alternative to the hustle and bustle of large Christmas markets come here in late summer.
The 2026 date will likely be officially announced in spring/summer 2026. Based on experience, the market takes place on the first weekend of September — in 2025 it was held on September 6/7. We will update the listing as soon as the city of Homburg publishes the date.
We can only publish the detailed program for 2026 after the official announcement. The proven structure of the last editions is expected:
Free admission. Direct purchase of exhibited works from the artists; refreshments payable in cash.
By car via the A6 (Homburg exit) and then north towards Jägersburg. Follow signs for Gustavsburg / Schlossweiher. By train to Homburg Hbf, then take the city bus towards Jägersburg.
Designated parking areas at the pond and at the Gustavsburg entrance; shuttle service may be offered during peak times.
Free admission.
Combine the market with a stroll around the Schlossweiher or a visit to the Schlossberghöhlen caves in downtown Homburg — Europe's largest sandstone caves are just under 5 km away.
